I have a male child that has attended Comer since Grade 7. The school is a little over the top with the demerits. Also, teachers that are not mature or that may have a dislike for the student can use this to their ability to control or bully the student. This schools focus seems to be control and not education. I know that self'-control is important but not to the point that a child can be demoted for detentions but maintain the honor roll. This to me should be a trigger that the child needs some type of help or counselling not be held back or allowed to transfer. I guess it's an easy job if you have mostly perfect kids.

Hello, My name is Karen White. There was an incident where my child had been picked on by a disciplinarian I made numerous amount of attempts to get in touch with the discipline team and the principal; however, I never received a call or email back. My next steps were to come up to the school and have a meeting but when I did they all acted as if they were busy. Gary Comer is a school based upon discipline instead of academics... that's why they are the lowest performing school in the noble net work

Gary Comer College Prep has very rigorous coursework as well disciplinary system. They use a system of demerits and merits where 4 demerits equal a 3 hour detention on Fridays when most students are let out at 1:05pm.

I see that most of the comments were written by staff members at the school; go figure. Parents, do your research before enrolling your children at Noble Schools. While I truly applaud them for their vision and purpose, they should also be ashamed of the way they 'nickle and dime' for the slightest infraction. As a youth entering a new environment, such as high school, it can be discouraging for a child to want to continue at a place where they are anxious about making the slightest mistake. Youths are given "LaSalles" for various reasons, ranging from forgetting to have a parent sign a form or stepping in the grass. (Lasalles can be compared to detentions) .My child literally becomes anxious before each school day. Instilling fear and anxiety in children only produces an environment where perfection seems to be expected. Expectations of the school are 'communicated' before the start of the school year but they should be thoroughly clarified so that parents can make a true informed decision ( for example, "missing" ONE question on a homework assignment warrants a LaSalle). After all, it is only our kids' morale at stake. My child will be transferring out.
