I substituted at that school one time and that was the only. The moment I arrived on time and early, I was instructed to sign in at the computer. After this I waited and waited to be sent to the class I was covering. After it was getting late and the morning bell rang, I found someone to take me to the room and my experience and impression was as follows:1. The assistant principal asked me to cover a 5th grade class vs the 7th grade class I was covering. I declined, but asked why and was told you may be more suited for this. I still declined2. I entered the class room and the teacher did an excellent job of preparing a substitute plan for the class and I gave them their work. The kids finished the work and were becoming restless (age appropriate for 7th graders). 3. I get a message keep the students for the next 2 mods/periods because they are doing testing. Well at this point the kids were restless, and a bit loud because had no work to do. The female assistant principal came into the room and removed several students most were Black boys for disciplinary purposes and to make an example then said to me watch how quiet it will get now. I did get quiet, because the numbers were lower. The only reason it was loud was the kids had no work and are in middle school and have not quite learned to self regulate.

The principal is never available, poor communication from the school to parents on pretty much everything, there's nothing "STEM" about the curriculum, other than the fact they use Chromebooks, and I'm pretty sure the majority of the teachers either hate kids, are not qualified to teach STEM, or both.

I don't feel that it is academically rigorous enough for the kids to face future academic challenges

As a student that was excited to go to a school where they academically challenge you, I was disappointed during the middle of the year where all I see are fights happening left and right. Academics are pretty good, except for a few things I personally don't like. If you didn't know, this school just recently merged with a few other school, but, lots of the students didn't come from the best schools, making the environment not too comfortable for new students, unless they came from bad schools themselves. I kid you not when there is at least a fight everyday/every other day. The sad part is, it used to be much worse than that. Someone always has beef with someone and can't handle it on their own time or with verbal confrontation. I hope my review helps the descision for schools to go to a little easier. This isn't just me being mad about my life here, I've also taken into account my friends' and other people's opinions in this school

My nephew has had a hard year emotionally (loss of immediate family member being one thing) and has been acting out a bit. Although the school has been made aware of this they continue to put him down and make it as if he is slower than the rest of his class. He actually shows that he knows everything and knowledge is more than what his "tests" show. The school has continued to show no concern or empathy towards our family situation and would not even give any solutions until the school board was contacted. It seems all the teachers want to do is come to the defense of his teacher and blame the child instead of owning up to brushing him off and allowing him to slip through the cracks. It's now the end of the school year and they are JUST now trying to give extra help but it may be too late. In all my years of dealing closely with teachers and caregivers I have never seen such a lack of genuine love and concern for a child. If you want your child to PROSPER and not just be average then this is not the school for your child.

My 6 year son was struggling academically and emotionally and all we got were excuses to validate why they offered no resolution until 3 months before the school year ended. The school had no regard for the trauma he had been through and offered no resources to assist me. This school is no more special than Nathaniel Alexander, the school he attended for Pre-K. When I offered to come to class to help the teacher with him, she said it would not be helpful but continued to send him to the office on a regular basis. I had to reach out to the school board in order to be granted a class observation and meeting with the staff.

This is supposed to be a magnet school with a focus on STEM learning. The STEM programming is nonexistent. The school leadership is not only uninterested in creating a STEM culture but is not vested in the success of ALL students. The student body is overwhelmingly Black, thus lacking diversity. The coursework is unimaginative and lacks the challenge needed to foster strong academic knowledge and skills for future success. In a world where the federal government mandates that employees are entitled to a 30-minute lunch it is beyond absurd that students are only provided 20-minutes. That is not only unhealthy but grossly unreasonable. The lack of extracurricular activities for middle school students is inexcusable, especially considering that middle school is an essential developmental phase in adolescence. This school does NOT deserve to be called a STEM school or a Magnet school. Mecklenburg County should be utterly ashamed of themselves for promoting it is as such.

My son has attended Morehead since Kindergarten , he is now in the 4th grade. I have had nothing more than a positive experience because his father and I are active parents. The school pushes each child to achieve and expands learning beyond the normal deskwork but engages them constantly. Our son loves his school and his grades reflect it. Thanks Morehead STEM Academy Staff for a job well done.

I have 3 children that attend Morehead. 2 of which have been there since Pre-K and 1 that has been the re since 1st grade. The best thing that could have happened was them transitioning to a K-8 school. I love the fact that the teachers really care about the students. I love professional Mondays. This allows children to learn early the importance of professionalism. My oldest will be graduating this year and I have had no complaints thus far. I honestly don't think that my children would have received the education or the experience at any other school.

I have a wonderful 6 year old son that attends John Motley Morehead STEM Academy as a first grader. He is currently making all 3's. He attended Kindergarten at University Meadows. It is obvious that the teachers and administrative staff at Morehead STEM desire to see their students succeed. The teachers work very hard and dedicate much of their time to the school. I love that my son's teacher encourages her students to participate in class and encourages good character growth through a barrage of different techniques. Students work algebra problems in class and are also required to complete some for homework (with parental assistance). I also love that every Monday the school ask that parents send their students to school in professional dress. This was just instituted as a means to teach kids about the importance of professionalism. My son's teacher needs to do a better job at communicating the curriculum to parents. If I did not ask my son daily about his school activities, I would not know about them at all. Or I would have to reach out to the teacher by emailing or classroom visit. I can do a better job at home if I knew where the finish line was located.

A 4th grade teacher announced to the class that she should have been a doctor instead of a teacher. Now what kind of role model is this? And the new principal want reprimand her because he is new to the school. I'm not impressed. And the homework assignments are put together so bad that your child or the parent can't understand how to solve it. So sick of school like this they make your child want to give up.

The wonderful thing about a magnet school is if you are not happy with it then your child can go some where else. I don't understand if you feel this way why you keep them there. There were 700+ people on the waitlist that would love that spot. Our experience has been nothing but positive but I understand with any school that will not always be the case. The school states at the start of the year it is a tough program, that will require hard work on the part of the child and the parent. There are days we struggle to keep up with the work load but it is worth it when you look at what they are learning.

My daughter was a kindergartener this past school year and we had a great experience with Morehead. She learned so much! She is already reading and writing and her math skills are great for her age. I am very happy that she attends this school.
