I have two kids currently enrolled at Overbrook Elementary (4th and 2nd grade). My family has had nothing but a positive experiences with the faculty and staff. My children have loved every teacher they’ve had since kindergarten. The administration and teachers care about each individual student and they encourage parent involvement in the school and outside of school.

the first day was normal getting paperwork telling my kids where their schoolroom was, I wasn't allowed to go see it because class was in session I guess for security purposes? the second day I didn't get the bus garage sheet we missed the bus I had to call and have my husband come back home so I could drive the kids to school around 8:30 and I was met with a huge attitude. I was told that they need the excuses ASAP for the 10 days my children missed I told her my kids haven't missed a week and a half what is she referring to I called the other school they was kind of confused and said that they've only missed Monday and Tuesday (is the two days that I was in process of moving), but before I had called the kids old school she said there was no excuses in the system. once I called old school she said out loud in the background very unprofessional as I was on the telephone with Piedmont elementary "don't you lie on me don't take my words out of context". ( all I did was repeat her exact words) she got up out of her chair and walked around the desk and said "do not lie on me and here at overbrook we don't approve of absences", I told her that those absences are confirmed excused everyone had the flu this is January 2020 and February 2020 West Virginia had the flu outbreak and everyone in my house was sick on top of trying to move. The fact that she told me not to twist her words and lie when I had it on speaker phone and jumped up in front of my children at 8 am being negative was so unprofessional!! my stomach turned. I had to walk away and leave MY children with this woman to take them to class which was extremely uncomfortable. these are people I need to trust with my babies that I gave birth to who act this way and now may treat my children different. I also noticed that when I said that I lived in the housing complex she changed her attitude ( I had to leave the home I own until I remodel it& change pipes) I did move into housing. Before I left my son looked at me and said Mom I forgot to eat breakfast I was so afraid to say anything because I was afraid at this point she would judge me for us forgetting to eat before we left the house in a rush that I told my son to please be quiet and wait on lunch & I would get him a treat ( yes I felt awful saying that) when he got home.

As long as your kid is calm and non-disruptive, you should be fine. If you need a bit of help and expect parent teacher conferences to advocate for your child, don't get your hopes up. Some teachers and the principal consider discipline cumulative and children aren't forgiven for infractions.

I had two sons attend Overbrook, one from K-4 and the other K-2. One of the things I disliked most about leaving Charleston was leaving this school. The teachers my boys had cared about the students and tried to challenge my children to perform to the best of their abilities. The teachers worked to find different ways to teach and help children learn so it was fun but still educational. Both my children excelled academically at Overbrook. My experience overall with parent-teacher communication was very positive and the cooperation between the administration and the Parent-Teacher Organization helped make this school stronger. Our family's time at Overbrook was a great start to my children's academic careers.
