Fantastic, caring teachers and staff. Chapel Hill Carrboro City Schools tend to be extremely competitive, and this high school is no exception.

Less than optimal. As a transfer student, I was quite disappointed with the student body and and rigor/strength of teaching. There was a significant over-inflation of the egos of both faculty and students alike, in terms of both the academics and athletics of the school. While generous resources were allotted and students received more individual attention, the negative culture of the school detracted heavily from the school experience. Though this school may be a positive example of North Carolina schools, it leaves a lot to be desired in terms of diversity, actual college preparation, and character building. In one instance, when trying to skip a level for a language class I was already qualified for, I was told it would "be unfair to groups of kids who had been historically not given the same opportunities as others" implying that, due to my race, it was not fair for me to be put in a class that was academically a better fit simply because, apparently, the school had not done its job to accommodate other students at some point. Pretty crazy.

This school is amazing in many ways and fosters an environment of learning and openmindedness unlike I have seen anywhere else in my life. Unlike the other, technically better performing, high schools in the area Carrboro benefits from being significantly newer and having the physical benefits of the better and newer space, as well as the school itself, is much smaller (physically but more importantly in the number of students) which, combined with the hardworking teachers, have prevented the competitive atmosphere from forming that exists at the two other high schools in the area.

The school is great academically but that's what you would expect in a college town. The problem with the school is that the administrators and instructors have very liberal views and rather than discussing and teaching both sides and perhaps justifying their viewpoints they just push one side of an argument. But it doesn't stop at bringing personal political views into the classroom. My son has been harassed by a two students since he started; one that is racially harassing him with racial slurs, verbal abuse and threats of physical violence and another is posting embarrassing and threats of violence on the internet. We've brought it to the schools attention repeatedly and since it doesn't fit their liberal view of which race or gender can be considered a victimizer nothing has been done.

A longtime, beloved teacher recently retired after years of being marginalized and, as a last step, forced out of her classroom at the end of last year. I doubt they have a replacement - many classes are unstaffed, relying on online or long-term substitutes. One of the classes (not my child's) had a substitute most of the year and found themselves far, far behind the other classes which probably hurt them on EOGs. My child's counselor is completely useless when asked for information about which math class should be taken next. Even though they forced out the Latin teacher, I doubt they are expanding on their language choices of only French, Spanish and Chinese (don't let their documentation fool you, they haven't offered Japanese or German for several years). When my child originally registered for German as a freshman, the school never said it wasn't being offered and no one found out until the class schedule came out a day or two before school started, leaving students to try to rearrange everything at the last second.Overall the academics and the administration at this school have been very disappointing - judged against other schools in this state this school is pretty good, but judged against other schools with this level of funding, and especially in this highly sought-after district, it is severely lacking.

This school is fantastic. The administration knows all the students and truly supports them. They honor diversity instead of practicing tolerance. It is a truly great learning environment.

The problem starts with the leadership in the school (or lack thereof). The principal in the school is not effective and the students do not respond to her. Due to the extreme liberal environment in Carrboro, drugs are not viewed as an issue. This school has one of the most severe drug problems starting in the middle schools that feed into it. My children go to this school and I am considering moving them to a charter school. Coming from a parent that has the attitude that actions drive the attitude of the youth, the school leadership is lacking in the ability to take action.

This school has had three principals since it opened just a few years ago. One was 'replaced', another quit. They can't seem to staff for scheduled classes, relying on a stream of substitutes, in at least one case, for most of the school year. The school has been racked by race tensions and "solves" them by amplifying the very situations that caused them in the first place. Knowledgeable parents frequently arrange for their children to attend another district high school, and with good reason. I suggest that you do so as well, for you child's sake. I thought having my children attend the local school was best for them ... boy, was I wrong. I could not be more disgusted at this waste of my tax dollar and wish I could go back in time and have had my kids reassigned elsewhere.

Pretty good school, but they spend too much time patting themselves on the back and not enough time fixing their problems.
