During our Kindergarten year, the time at this school was great. The teachers were very good and we had no issues. However, in 1st grade my child was diagnosed on the spectrum and needed a 504/IEP to help her through the next coming years at this school. The teacher was awful, giving no support and trying to blame myself as a single parent for my child’s learning difficulties. The special education teacher at the time was extremely belittling and the Principal offered no assistance during the meeting. It was only after I found a Special Needs Advocate and brought these wonderful ladies to the next meeting that the school immediately 180 on their attitude towards myself and my child and offered aide. Yet with the following weeks of disdain towards myself and my kids, I soon withdrew her from the school and moved to a more healthy district where she could get the help she needed without biases.

From top to bottom, everyone at Emily Dickinson seems so calm, kind, caring, and friendly. There is such a warm atmosphere. The PAC (PTA) organizes a lot of great activities (like an after-school Family Movie Night in the gym), and there is a lot of all-family participation in the low-cost, low-pressure, fun events. On the last day of school, as the 5th graders leave for the last time, the rest of the students line the halls and do a “clap out” to celebrate the oldest kids. More than half of the 5th graders are in tears, as well as many of the younger kids, which is a wonderful endorsement. There is an economically and racially diverse student population, but without any of the stereotypical downsides: teachers have full control of classrooms, the kids are kind to each other, and the school has excellent academics, with high student performance scores (and improvement) on standardized tests. It’s almost magic! The worst thing about the school is the rude awakening when they hit junior high in 6th grade - and I do wish Emily Dickinson was K-6 instead of K-5. You can tell that the kids are learning what they are supposed to learn and a good pace and also having a wonderful childhood experience. I feel bad for our older kids that didn’t get to go there. The only critique I have is that the school teaches the kids how to read in kindergarten, the research doesn’t support that - many kids aren’t ready, and for them, starting too early is counterproductive. Thankfully the school has a good enough support system and positive environment that it seems to work out okay.

Such a family friendly school. The principal is amazing as are the teachers. We have had four children attend and just love it...... and this is after spending several years with children at Hawthorne and one year at Longfellow! Emily Dickenson far exceeds both of those!

The school is very easy to work with. The teachers and the principal are happy to talk to a parent whenever needed. I could call the teacher in the classroom and talk to her if I needed to. My daughter misses this school.

Great teachers, great programs, great location and neighborhood. This school has a huge playground where the kids play at recess and it is nestled in one of Bozeman's quiet residential neighborhoods away from main roads and other hazards that can be dangerous to small children. Best public school in Bozeman bar none!
