When I moved to Blacksburg a few years ago, I pored over these GreatSchool rankings like they were the Bible, so I feel compelled to come back three years later and say how much my family loves Margaret Beeks. There are some amazing, dedicated teachers here. The front office staff and all the specials teachers are excellent; I've never seen a cooler PE class, and I say that as someone who despised PE as a kid. The librarian is a dynamo and makes sure she always has just what the kids want to read. PTO events like International Night and Movie Night create a strong sense of community, and if you're willing to show up and help out, there's a lot of openness to new ideas. Is Margaret Beeks perfect? Of course not. The building is 50 years old, and it shows. I'm sure that some teachers are less effective than others. And I wish more parents had time to be involved. But it's a small enough school that your child will be known and cared for as an individual, and I love that.

Just an average school...some gems here in teachers and students but not an overall cohesive school or mission. Staff does not reflect the economic or ethnic make up of the student body and this allows for a real disconnect between the two...it's a very 'I'm the teacher and you're the student old-school philosophy that permeates here. A true partnership with families to make their child's experience the best is not the mission here. The county also keeps adding students to an already full building...stretching resources and patience, which is palpably felt but every November...just a few months into school. Why are so many teachers just tired here?

MB simply gets "it". They know how to teach, treat the students right and run a school without making it a big deal. They just do it without having to brag and attract attention. This is the school that does it right. Their updated technology is top notch. These students want for nothing because the people in charge know what is important and what is needed.
