I cannot speak to grades K-5, but can say that the Pre-K program is absolutely awful. My daughter came home filthy every day, her clothes ripped and stained. New shoes covered in black scuffs, all of this after playing INSIDE the classroom. The carpets haven’t been cleaned in god knows how long, you can tell from looking at them. You are not allowed to pack your child a lunch, but they will serve them frozen uncrustables (pb&j) and things your child may refuse if they’re picky like mine.My daughter was miserable, heartbreaking to a parent as a first time school experience for their child. Other children would hit and bully my child (over her SNEAKERS, at 4 years old) and the teachers never once let me know or seemed to do anything about it. I never got updates on my daughter, was never told if she was hurt in class, zero communication with the “teacher”, who was disorganized and out of touch with the parents. The day I enrolled my daughter in a different school, I could not WAIT to pick her up from that awful classroom. Compared to her school now, Horace Man’s pre-k program is akin to a poorly ran, filthy daycare. It seemed nice during orientation, boy were we wrong. Her artwork has gone from scribbles to beautiful drawings, her math skills are amazing for a child her age, and she’s learning Spanish & sign at her new school. I give zero credit to Horace Man’s pre-k program, it feels like months wasted where she could’ve been receiving a real education.

This is a great school. The teachers are very caring and knowledgeable. They communicate effectively with the students and the parents. The school principal is wonderful and knows all the students and their parents, he goes out of his way to know the families. The lower scores in the tests are due to the transition students, not to the students that are in this school throughout the academic year. Students learn Spanish from 2nd grade onwards, and can learn to play a musical instrument from 3rd grade onwards - each student can rent the instrument for the academic year. Regarding diversity, this is one of the most diverse, integrative schools in NY. My son has diverse friends not only from different cultures and races but also with different socio-economic backgrounds. The support during the current pandemic has been excellent. Website statistics often reflect the income level of the neighborhood rather than the quality of the education the students receive. So, if you are thinking of moving to Binghamton, This is a great school for your kid to attend. You will get all the support you need.

You have to know there are genuine problem in a community when objective rating systems judge schools to be rock bottom yet community parents simply love the schools. How can that not be a wake up call to anyone considering moving into the community. It's been true about this insular isolated community for generations. Locals think all is great despite a rock bottom economy, chronically failing schools and a bullying climate in schools with decent scores that reflects the rural Trump loving community those schools serve. If you have kids and are considering a move to Binghanton, don't.

Our daughter has had an excellent experience at this school. We love living within a couple blocks in a historic and diverse neighborhood. Our daughter walks to school. She has diverse friends and excellent teachers with whom she has been encouraged to form lasting relationships; she regularly goes back to her old classrooms to lunch with her "teacher friends." She especially loves Challenge, Odyssey of the Mind, Band, Spanish, Choir, and Sisterhood. The fabulous newly renovated accessible playground at gorgeous Rec Park serves as their playground. The principal is beloved. I feel we are lucky to attend one of the few truly integrated schools left in this country. We've been hearing a lot of good things about West Middle lately from families who have graduated from HM and our kid is looking forward to the next stage, though she'll miss her teachers here.
