Martin Luther King Jr Middle school is an amazing place with a lot to offer. Despite having larger class sizes, the teachers are still incredibly dedicated and make an effort to ensure every student feels supported. The campus is very big with a bunch of space to play during recess. The school fosters a strong sense of community, with plenty of opportunities for students to connect and get involved. For example, once I was having trouble with homework so I went to the library during after-school where the school has cal students help with homework. Overall, it is a very fun and engaging experience and I am very grateful to be a part of the community.

My daughter is enjoying King, and i believe that King staff and faculty work hard to make sure the school environment is healthy, productive, and conducive of learning and social growth for each child. The place is full of pre-teens, tweens, and new teenagers, so there may be a bit of drama and angst, but for the most part I see that parents are actively engaged, staff are well-trained and prepared to deal with any on-campus problems, and students are smart and self-aware. My daughter loves her teachers -- even those that challenge her -- and has made lots of friends from each and every part of Berkeley. I am concerned about the difference between the global rating King has received for the entire school's test scores and the low-income rating -- I do want all children to do well at this school, and if this means that low-income students are doing less well then all other students, then the school community (faculty, staff, families, school and parent leaders) has to work together to figure out how/why they are not being adequately reached where they are to bring them up to parity with all the other students' performance. I want King to be exemplary for all students. My daughter's experience with King is that it is a fine school that offers a great, thorough, rigorous education to its students -- I want that for everyone here, but just the kids that are more well-off.
