In my experience, the school needs upgrading in a few areas ... more focus on academics, higher quality homework assignments, better / more frequent teacher - parent communications, more frequent bathroom breaks for kids, and pickup / drop off create new system which are currently a confused mess, unsafe with little kids running through the parking lot and cars packed-in / backing up, its an accident waiting to happen. The people are generally friendly, mixed working class. The staff does seem overwhelmed, and somewhat inexperienced at managing the growing population of students in the community. So far, I'd rate Powers 3+ needs a quality upgrade, but adequate.

I feel like certain students get singled out. My daughter buys her lunch at school. D/t spring break and my daughter missing a couple days I wasnt aure if she was owed lunch money. I had her ask rhe lunch lady who told her the teacher had a paper. The next day she was sent home with a paper she owes $6. Lunch is $3 so shes 2 days behind. She brought the note home and told me they took her lunch from her in front of all the kids and gave her a cheese sandwich. She was very upset and embarassed. Shes only 7. The school could of waited until after I got the note so I could pay the debt before doi g that. The reason I believe my daughter was singled out is I recieved a letter not long ago that was sappoed to go to a different parent that owed way more than $6 and according to my daughter none of the other students have ever had there lunch taken away.

My youngest son has been at Powers going on his 2nd year. We transferred to Amherst Exempted Schools from Lorain City Schools when we moved. I can't say enough about Amherst Schools. They have definitely helped my children dramatically. Powers teachers and principal are fantastic. They take the time out to make sure the kids excel. My son was behind on reading, math and a few other things due to a Chinese Immersion program at LCS.... when he went onto 1st grade he was not doing too well. Amherst brought him upto speed, worked with me and we all agreed repeating 1st was going to be the best for my son. It definitely was the best. He is a more confident reader, LOVES math, and will actually complain if he doesn't get enough homework. His self-esteem academically has skyrocketed!
