This school is a prison for children. The principal is the worst.

There’s no family engagement, no teachers supervising children in the morning. Teachers and principal are rude. Subs have mentioned never wanting to work there as teachers. Principal runs the school like a corporation with little to no family engagement. In the morning parents are watching their children on the playground till the teachers come and get the kids when the bell rings. Perfect set up for child predators. Most parents can’t stay to supervise their children so we set up days to watch each others kids. But I had to take off work to supervise my son because of bullying in the mornings. He also told me kids were smoking electronic cigarettes. If you bring up your concerns to the principal she disregards anything you have to say. As she had a PhD and you don’t basically. Trying to reach the teacher is almost impossible. They don’t take calls or emails. You can send a message on synergy but they won’t reply till days later. If your child has any learning disability you have to beg them help accommodate and prove with many many doctors/therapist notes. Still they never stick to it.

Dr. Johnson is the WORST principal EVER!! She is extremely arrogant and very unwelcoming. My child has been here since Kindergarten and we’ve had 1 good teacher in the 4yrs. she’s been there and she quit! My child has a 504 plan and they did NOTHING to support her. I had to constantly ask what they were doing to support her learning and I was made to feel like that’s my problem. We’re extremely involved in her school work/homework. We volunteer when we can and what we’ve seen is complete chaos! They do NOTHING “fun” for the children like cute dances for Valentine’s Day, or Halloween, etc. I know these are not required events, but there’s nothing for them to look forward to. They had an end of the year play day and it was so cheap. I could go on and on… We’re trying to transfer out but currently we’re on a waitlist. Overall, if you can DO NOT SEND YOUR CHILD HERE!!

The Principal is horrible to work with. Very hands off and arrogant. It feels like the teachers are afraid of her. If you have a child that has learning needs or help, don't expect it from this school. Also, don't expect your kid to be at reading level. They lower standards and don't address low reading scores.

My son and daughter both attended Sunset View and we had a great experience. but cannot say the same for the local middle schools. My daughter will be going to JMMS this coming fall and my son will be returning to JMMS after transfering him to THMS. JMMS is not mine or my husbands first choice but we need the kids to be able to ride the bus to school and home as we do not have family near by. THMS was not what we expected and after experiencing both I would choose JMMS Both my kids really enjoyed Sunset and we will be sad to leave. I would recommend to anyone in the district. It is overall a great school with most administration and teachers truly caring about their students. Our experience with teachers was mostly positive and the principal really cared about her students and the school as a whole. My husband said why can't we just leave them at sunset whyyy. We might be moving out of town next year so hopefully the intermediate schools there will be better.

It has been a problem from day one. My kids have been bullied and the teachers just brush it off. And if you want to meet with the principal good luck cause she will not meet with you or address your concerns. She is cold, rude and dismissive. Most of the staff act like they work at a prestigious school and have their noses in the air. They pick and choose who they are nice to and if they don't like you they won't like your kids either and will treat them rudely too. It is the most negative school atmosphere we have ever been in. There is no positive reinforcement for these kids. The staff doesn't have any compassion towards the kids but won't address bullying. Worst school ever!

Overall I'd rate this school a 6. There isn't a lot of parent involvement. The principal made it very clear that you may not pass the office with out a background check. Bobby is the best husband ever was heavily involved at our last school and getting involved was nearly impossible. There were hardly any family events and not a single fundraiser during our 7 months at the school. The school feels more like a corporation than a community.

Very, very poor. We have experienced six homeroom teachers and multiple "specials" teachers and overall I have started counting the days down in January until we are free of the school in May. Every year I am sorry I haven't moved my kids out. This is our last year trying to meet them on their ground, compromise, and communicate for a better experience for my kids. No more.

The school and teachers are excellent, but the school really needs a different Principal. She isn't involved enough, and doesn't seem to have any kind of connection with the children. Distant, cold, rude and self absorbed. The staff take care of any issues parents might have, as Ms Johnson is not approachable.

As a deaf mom to 3 hearing daughters. My 2 daughters had attended Sunset View Elementary School while my last daughter is still a student at Sunset View Elementary School. I have seen my daughters done a lot of achievements over there plus the teachers and staff in the office have been communicated with me very well. I felt very involved in their activities plus any events. I had no problem with Dr. Johnson, the principal over there and she does say Hi when I walk to drop off my girls off there. My eldest daughter who was attending James Monroe Middle School during that time, she felt welcomed and her former teachers always love see her by saying hi and how are you when we go together to pick up her sisters/my young kids. The teachers and staffs are very excellent over there. Don't let the rating scare you or any negative comments about that. You will know what is best education for your child (children) by seeing your own eyes. There are couple of teachers who can be reserved by telling me that my child is struggling, but I had made sure that I worked with the teacher to make sure that my child has improved academically. I got to know those teachers and we did together to make sure that my daughters has done successfully. It's all about that I was a daughter of a principal at Twinsburg Elementary School in Ohio while I was growing up so I learned to work together with the teachers as well. No matter if you don't like the teacher, staff or principal, then learn to work it together to make it successfully in any schools, not just the specific ones. If your child don't like the school, then it's okay to transfer to other school. Overall, I"m extremely satisfied with Sunset View Elementary School along with the staffs and teachers.

I love this school. My son has gone here for two years and so far has had wonderful teachers. He had to switch in the middle of kindergarten from Petroglyph, which we also loved, and were worried he wouldn't like it as much. We thought we had lucked out the first time around, but then he got Ms. Skinner. She is absolutely amazing. He really loved going to school because of her! His next year he got Ms. Garcia, and she was good as well! Her teaching skills were excellent even though sometimes she seemed frazzled. I also have done my field work, I'm at the start of student teaching, and have gotten to work with some great teachers as well. Overall, the teaching in this school is above par. The staff is great and has a wonderful connection with the children. All of the PTA events are well above my expectations. My son actually got to perform at Albuquerque Little Theater last year as part of the school play. I do have to say though, even though I am ALWAYS at the schools I don't really get to see the Principle. She is very inactive and largely I have to talk to Betty in the front office or Ms. Thompson (who might as well be principle) if I need anything.

We have had a great experience at Sunset View. The principal is a little abrasive, and doesn't seem very interested in what parents (or teachers for that matter) have to say or their problems and concerns. My kids have had amazing teachers, though! The office staff is friendly and helpful. Parent involvement is high, though it seems to decline significantly once you get to about 3rd grade. My only real complaint is that the school doesn't monitor visitors very well. It's a simple signing of your name in a binder that just sits out in the office and slap a sticker on your shirt and you have free run of the school. I wish they'd at least make you ask for the binder to sign in rather than leave it out; it would be very easy to grab a sticker and not sign in if you were there to cause trouble. Otherwise I've been very happy with the school, with very few exceptions. I'd definitely recommend it.

Not sure what the school is like yet but it looks nice so I'm excited for my daughter to start 1st grade.

This school could be 10x better if they were led by a different principal....Dr. Johnson is terrible at dealing with conflict head on..she screens her calls way too much and takes her time to address issues with parents days later. When scheduling a meeting with her and a teacher she has another teacher represent her. She also backs up her teachers 100% whether they are right or wrong which can be an issue sometimes. The teacher's my child had were great but unfortunately the scholl is being ran by a rude, uppity, non-caring individual.
