Centrally-located in urban Washington DC, Shaw is a diverse neighborhood that has an irresistible mix of culture, trendiness and a caring community. The Shaw area offers its residents a robust selection of farmers markets. The Mount Vernon Triangle DC farmers market, for example, was established in 2013 and is located at 5th and K Streets NW. In addition to offering a selection of fresh fruits, vegetables and meats, this farmers market includes a number of exciting activities such as chef demonstrations, games, live music, children's activities and more. In general, the Mount Vernon Triangle farmers market is open on Saturdays from 10am to 1pm from mid-May until Halloween. At the Bloomingdale Farmers' Market -- also colloquially know as BFM by those who live locally -- you can salivate over a staggering assortment of cheeses, eggs, preserves, meats, fruits, pies, plants and more in an open-air market atmosphere. You'll find selections from both conventional farmers as well as those who practice organic methods of growing. Located on R Street between Florida and First Avenue -- right across from a fantastic playground and next door to the Big Bear Cafe, BFM is typically open on Sundays from 9am to 1pm from early May until late November. In addition to drawing people from the Shaw neighborhood, BFM is also a popular Sunday destination for people from the neighborhoods of Eckington, Bates, Truxton Circle, Edgewood, Bloomingdale, RIA, Stronghold and more. Head down to the U Street corridor and you will discover many delights -- among them is the 14th and U Farmer's Market. Located very near the U Street Metro stop so it is incredibly convenient to get to, this farmers market has a more intimate feel than some of the city's other, larger markets. With knowledgeable and friendly vendors and unique offerings, this open air market offers a selection of fresh flowers, produce, pasta and more. It is usually open only on Saturdays from 9am until 1pm.
Shaw has its own special culture and vibe that sets it apart from other Washington DC neighborhoods. That this culture is grounded in the arts is evident from the structures that are seen within the community that are dedicated to the arts as well as the long history the area has with music such as jazz. A strong sense of community is also seen in the way that historic figures are honored. The African-American Civil War Memorial, located at 1000 U St NW, is the only such monument that honors these soldiers who fought during the War Between the States. Situated among 157 plaques of burnished stainless steel are the names of over 209,000 members of the United States Colored Troops. In addition, 7000 white officers served as well and their names are included. For a glimpse into Oriental opulence, make time for a visit to House of the Temple. A Scottish Rite headquarters, this gigantic Masonic Temple can be found at 1733 16th St NW. Admission is free with hours Monday through Thursday from 10am until 4pm.
Howard Theater is a historic venue that hosted some of the biggest names in music such Duke Ellington, Buddy Holly, Dinah Washington, Pearl Bailey and more during the neighborhood's heyday. In a nod to the upsurge in fresh talent that is being pumped into Shaw, in 2012, Howard Theater underwent a $29 million renovation and is once more the site of performances from people that should be noted.
