If you're looking for the perfect suburb to raise your family away from the city, in a place where everyone knows everyone and barbecues with the neighbors are commonplace, then Wheaton real estate might hold the keys to your dream home. Wheaton is about 25 miles from the city. It is close enough to commute or make the trip in for special events, but Wheaton offers so much in the way of activities, entertainment, and necessities that most of its residents can find everything they need right at home. Wheaton has a very small town feel but that doesn't make it exceptionally small, with a population of more than 53,000, there's plenty to do and a great deal of wonderful events throughout the year.

Smaller homes are affordable for a more modest income, while there are many larger homes available, as well. The crime rate is very low compared to the city and families often enjoy the perks of being able to walk to school and through the neighborhood. Kids bike ride and play at the park and there's always some outdoor activity up and down the lovely tree-lined streets. Education is important in Wheaton and the school system is highly regarded. Wheaton has a number of grammar and middle schools in their public school district and two high schools serve the area, Wheaton North and Wheaton Warrenville South. There are also a number of private schools which offer a great choice for parents who prefer more religious based or rigorous education. Wheaton is home to 45 churches, offering families a great variety of religious and social activity to raise their children with and participate in. In fact, religious life is one of the drawing factors for many families in this area. Wheaton College is located in Wheaton and serves as a highly ranked liberal arts college of interdenominational Christian faith. Notable alumni include Billy Graham and Todd Beamer (a hero from 911's Flight 93). The college campus is an integral part of life in Wheaton and gives the area a very college town feel.
There are a number of fantastic events in Wheaton for families, as well as visitors from across the state. The DuPage County Fairgrounds are located in Wheaton and they host The DuPage County Fair every July. This event is well attended and features performances from well known musicians and singers, including professional recording artists and top selling musical acts. The fair hosts a Fourth of July fireworks show which is always a huge draw, and a variety of games, rides, and food for the family to enjoy. Wheaton Park District is outstanding, with more than 800 acres and a great variety of parks for residents to take advantage of.
Downtown Wheaton hosts a French Market every Saturday with specialty items and fantastic foods which is a draw for many residents all year long. They move the French Market indoors through the winter months to accommodate patrons through the cold and many of the same vendors participate throughout the year. Wheaton Public Library is rated as one of the top ten libraries in the country and there are many events and groups through the library for patrons of all ages. In January, Wheaton hosts the Ice Fest in Martin Memorial Plaza. Residents can come out and watch ice sculptures being created and tour the streets lined with this temporary but gorgeous display of craftsmanship and artistry. Wheaton also has its own Cosley Zoo, which has over 200 animals - a great treat to bring the kids to while away a few hours and it's free of charge.
Besides the great parks, fairgrounds, and amenities for citizens, Wheaton also has wonderful shopping and a great variety of restaurants, coffee shops, and pubs. Wheaton is quite a bit away from the city travel wise compared to some other suburbs, but it also offers a great deal to keep residents very entertained at home.
A lot of people will first think of Wheaton College or family life when the suburb is mentioned but, for anyone who knows much about sports, you really can't forget to mention the golf. The Chicago Golf Club is located in Wheaton and has the distinction of being the oldest 18 hole golf course in the country. They've been host to numerous nationally televised events, including the Walker Cup and US Open.
The Cantigney Park and Golf Course is also located in Wheaton. Cantigney was the home of Robert McCormick, the owner of the Chicago Tribune. It's since become home to a world-renown 18 hole golf course, which has also hosted national events. Besides the golf course, Cantigney is home to two museums; one devoted to the Chicago Tribune and one related to the United States Army, as McCormick served with the First Division in World War I.
Golf is obviously a huge draw in this area and brings in serious golfers from around the state and, in fact, the world. These are some great courses to play on. But the park districts offer other activities as well, including equestrian events, swimming, and pretty much and form of outdoor play.
