Bronzeville is a main part of the Douglas community on Chicago's South Side. Its beginnings go back to the early 20th century during what was termed the Great Migration of African-Americans out of the South as they sought opportunity. This led to Bronzeville becoming a predominantly African-American community where residents attained middle-class status through the industrial jobs that were plentiful in those days. The Wabash Avenue YMCA opened in Bronzeville in 1914 and is credited as the nation's first African-American YMCA. It played a major philanthropic role in offering locals vocational training. In 1926, Dr. Carter G. Woodson, a scholar who lived in the neighborhood, came up with the idea of an official week to celebrate African-American history. In 1976, this evolved into Black History Month. Many African-American pioneers have lived in Bronzeville, including Bessie Coleman, the first African-American pilot, and musicians Sam Cooke and Louie Armstrong.
