If you're looking for attractive old-world architecture and a neighborhood known for its safety and proximity to downtown
Chicago, Old Town might be the perfect place to settle down.
Though Old Town isn't an official Chicago district, locals typically think of it as the area north of Chicago's Loop, particularly Wells Street between Division and North Avenue.
Old Town's roots run deep. German-Catholic immigrants first settled in the area in the 1850s, and an influx of European influence gave rise to Victorian and Bavarian-style architecture.
Today, the neighborhood is known as safe, affluent, and attractive, while staying well within easy reach of nightlife, delicious dining, and public transportation.
Reputation
Old Town is known as a great area for families as well as young professionals looking for a place to settle within close proximity to downtown Chicago.
Though it has a reputation for affluent residents, pricey homes, and prohibitively expensive parking, Old Town also boasts some affordable options for up-and-comers, and it's quiet without being curmudgeonly, a big plus for younger residents.
The area (as well as the bordering Gold Coast and Lincoln Park neighborhoods) is also considered among the safest areas near downtown Chicago to buy a home.
Hot Spots
While central Chicago boasts enormous, modern shopping malls, Old Town is more known for its specialty boutiques. Here you'll find one-of-a-kind goods that aren't available at major chain stores. Dining options run the gamut from old-fashioned American food to French and Asian cuisine.
The Lincoln Park Zoo is a popular attraction within easy walking distance. If theater is more your style, stop and catch a show at the Red Orchid Theater across the street from the Old Town Aquarium on Wells Street.
Safety
Though Old Town is safer than much of downtown Chicago, it's still part of the metro area so there’s a higher risk of property crime than in other parts of the state. 12 violent crimes were reported per 1,000 people annually in the Old Town neighborhood, compared to 4 per 1,000 residents in Illinois as a whole. Property crime rates in Old Town are lower than Chicago's average but higher than Illinois state averages.
Convenience
Old Town is within easy reach of the “L” and offers plenty of bus routes, so you won't have a problem commuting just about anywhere in the city. It's also very walkable. Depending on your residence, you'll find ample shopping and dining options within a few blocks of your front door.
Some Old Town residents choose to keep a vehicle, but if you plan on it, be prepared to pay a premium for parking.
Types of Homes
You won't find many
single-family homes in Old Town, but the ones you do find will come with a hefty price tag and limited square footage. The majority of residences in the neighborhood are
condos in renovated elevator buildings and
town home style arrangements.
Many condos in this area are renovated boutique or office buildings built in the 1800s. While their exteriors preserve the architectural style and personality of that era, the interiors have typically been remodeled with the open floor plans and modern amenities you'd expect from a city condominium.
