1. The Windy City Is The Mecca of the Midwest
Chicago is the largest city in the Midwest and arguably the most cultured, diverse and hard working among its big-city peers. It is the city where you can achieve anything without having to sacrifice a grounded Midwest vibe.
If you have any doubts about that statement, stick around because I have 21 more reasons that prove I’m right.
2. And Also Better Than New York And LA
It has better public transportation than LA and people you actually want to talk to, unlike ahem, New York. The cost of living is cheaper than both coasts and there’s not nearly as much snobbery, but it still checks off all the boxes for excitement and atmosphere in big city.
It really is the best of both worlds.
3. Not That Chicagoans Really Give A F$%&
The fact that I’m even comparing Chicagoans to New Yorkers or Angelenos probably puts a bad taste in their mouth. Not because Chicagoans think so highly of themselves, but because they honestly couldn’t care less about what anybody thinks of them.
They’re nothing like the coastal cities and they like it that way.
4. It’s Still The Sears Tower. Period.
A cornerstone of the Chicago skyline and recognized around the world, the Willis Tower watches over the city day and night. But you won’t catch many Chicagoans calling it by that name.
5. The White Sox Run The Southside...

When it comes to baseball, Chicago is a city divided. Claiming loyalty to the White Sox is something bound by blood. You’re making a clear distinction about what kind of human being you are by claiming loyalty to them.
This claim to loyalty brings a heavy burden though, because being a White Sox fan means that you’re sworn to scorn the “other” baseball fans of Chicago no matter what.
6. … And The Cubs Run The Northside
Chicago Cubs Facebook Page
The rivalry between the White Sox & The Cubs can be traced all the way back to the founding of the American League in 1900. When it comes to the Cubs, I have to respect a team that is so good at being so bad.
Okay, maybe they aren’t that bad, but they certainly aren’t winning a World Series anytime soon. I may or may not believe in the Curse of the Billy Goat.
OK, I do.
7. But Don’t Forget About The Blackhawks

If it’s hockey that claims your true loyalty, Chicago still doesn’t disappoint. The Chicago Blackhawks are one of the best teams in the Western Conference, so don't be ashamed if you don’t want to take sides in the baseball feud.
8. Every Neighborhood Has Its Own Personality
Chicago has a network of neighborhoods that all bring something unique to the city but, they’ve all got one thing in common—they’re all huge.
Bucktown/Wicker Park has it’s craft beer, hipsters and artistic types.
Head to Ukrainian Village for chic boutiques and trendy night hotspots.
Gold Coast/Old Town has the beach classy cocktails.
Wrigleyville has the bars and the bros.
The list goes on and on.
9. And The Pizza Is The Stuff Of Legends
Don’t believe those Yankee lies. Chicago-style deep dish is the king of all pizza. You can find some slices of the real deal at Giordanos, Ginos, Pizzeria Uno or Lou Malnati’s.
10. Chicagoans Are Real Nice Folk
Everybody is on the go and has someplace to be. It’s a part of the Windy City urban lifestyle. But Chicagoans aren’t so busy that they don’t want to get to know you. So get used to small talk.
But be warned: Chicagoans don’t beat around the bush. If they’ve got something to say, they’ll just come out with it.
11. If You Don’t Like The Weather, Just Wait A Minute
Like many areas of the Midwest, Chi-town’s weather goes through some serious mood swings, sometimes all in one day. One minute you’ll be at Navy Pier enjoying the summer sun, the next you’ll be racing to catch the #124 because the heavens have opened.
By the time you get home, the sun will be shining again.
12. And The Lake Effect Is A Real Thing
Just a warning.
13. You’ll See People From Everywhere Come For The Festivals
Lollapalooza, Riot Fest, Pitchfork, Electric Daisy Carnival, Spring Awakening – If you’re a music lover, Chicago will provide the best summer of your life. And the summer after that. And the one after that.
14. Chicago’s Food Groups Are Beer, Meat and Potatoes
Chicago is one of those cities that really is on the culinary frontier. However, there’s still a large population of locals that stick to their Chicago roots–beer, meat and potatoes. It’s a diet that only a true American can endure.
15. Chicagoans Have Their Own Accents, Whether They Admit It Or Not
They exaggerate their “a”s. Wisconsin is said like “Wis-Caaan-san”, and while the “Da Bears” is simply a parody, you can still run into plenty that will use “dese, dem, & dose” on the regular.
16. OK I Just Can’t Help Myself: “Daaa Bears” Is Pretty Darn Great

The magic happens about 30 seconds in.
17. But Don’t Say You’re From Chicago If You’re From “The Burbs”
Just don’t. This is the fastest way to get a true blue Chicagoan to think you’re an idiot. Chicago is a state of mind and anybody who doesn’t live in the city does not embody all those characteristics and might as well be a tourist.
I cannot stress this point enough.
18. Everyone Drives Like There Is A Stick Of Dynamite Up Their A$
I’m from Indianapolis and anytime I driven to Chicago I notice that the closer I get to the city, the more I worry about highway homicide.
Chicagoans like to drive fast, switch lanes fast, hit the breaks fast–you get the idea. Be sure you’ve taken a defensive driving course before traveling to Chi-town. Or just consider another commuting option, since...
19. The CTA Is A-OK
I’m sorry. That was terrible.
But it’s true, Chicago has one of the most intuitive public transit systems around. The CTA can get you where you need to be, whether it’s for shopping, eating, music, and pretty much anything else.
Sure, the Redline and buses have their fair share of peddlers and crazies, but compared to a city like New York it can feel a bit classy at times.
20. Chicago Is Basically The Nashville Of The Midwest
Chicago has been a breeding ground for music talent since the 1920s. A few that might grab your attention: Nat King Cole, Buddy Guy, Herbie Hancock, Patti Smith, Eddie Vedder (Pearl Jam), Tom Morello (Rage Against The Machine), Cheap Trick, Ok GO, Kanye West, & Fall Out Boy.
21. You’ll Give In To The Bean
If your friends have played tourist in Chicago, they took a picture here. I guarantee it. If you live in Chicago, you’ve taken a picture here too. I guarantee it.
22. Chicago Really Is The All-American City
Chicago works harder, does it better, gets it done faster, and comes out stronger. Chicagoans are proud, loyal and not afraid to get dirty. Take notes, America.
