Unless you are a white male, chances are you will struggle socially and mentally at WHS. I attended Winthrop schools from 6th grade up to my freshman year. From my first year to my last I was constantly being mistreated by the people around me and when I spoke up about it the administration/staff did nothing. Many girls including me were sexually harassed and/or assaulted and when the administrators were alerted of this they brushed it off with no punishments given out. My younger sibling attends the middle school and has seen sexual assault happening with nothing being done about it. Kids do drugs and drink in the bathrooms, and despite the administration’s “efforts” to keep them under control, nothing works. I would say from experience that while the school promotes equality and respect as their core values, the majority of the community is homophobic, racist, and ableist with nothing being done about it. This school system is overall very corrupt and I do not recommend it to anyone.

Having children in the system for over 16 years the school system is extremely unbalanced. Unless you are part of the elite group of parents your concerns regarding your child are not the concern of the administration. If you are a parent who voices your concern you become a problem. Its sad when we teach our children not to bully yet give the power to the principal who leads this role in his behavior. He is now the high school principal and should not be in a position to have so much control. Being treated equally is not an option in this system. You are either part of the click or your a problem. I have worked in the school system especially with the teachers and find them receptive and generally sincere in wanting the best for the kids. Its because of them that we saw it through. We have more people pulling their children out and putting them in other community schools. Two years ago our Senior class had almost less than half of its class graduate. Do the research. Ask for numbers, and talk to parents who have kids in sports and them who don't. Its a very clear line.

My son attends Winthrop High School, and though he does struggle in a couple classes, the teachers do whatever is necessary to help him excel! They are committed to working with the kids and community..
