I am a graduate of Mount Madonna School and think that it has been one of the most pivotal learning institutions I attended. The school emphasis academic excellence, positive self expression and creative arts. This school helped me focus because my head is often in the clouds. The small class sizes provided me with support when I struggled to grasp academic concepts and teachers that genuinely cared about my success. The performing arts program helped create a community through the grades, demonstrated what a long term project could accomplish and helped me to grow as a person. All of that and I haven't touched upon the yearly trips to expand my wold experience. I didn't want to go on any of them and so glad I did. They filled me with curiosity and wonder beyond the circle in which I live. The education I received there helped mold me into the person I am today. I highly recommend this school if you want a student to be engaged, challenged and supported.

Two of my children attended and graduated from Mount Madonna School. This institution is truly exceptional, offering students a comprehensive and well-rounded worldview. It provides individualized support across all subject areas, ensuring that each student receives the guidance they need to succeed. Graduates leave with the skills, knowledge, and confidence required to excel in both higher education and in life.

Mount Madonna School has been a game changer for my daughters. Coming from public schools and Covid, MMS has opened up their minds again to real life learning, both with academics and social engagement and this continues to show up in many positive ways. The heart of this place is palpable. Walking on campus is beautiful and even more beautiful to me is the sound of (middle and high school) kids at play. The Performing Arts programs exposes students to positive character development in the realms of public speaking, creativity and team work in ways they might not ever get the chance to without being a “theater” kid at other schools. I feel strongly that the connection to nature and pro-social involvement in diversity is preparing my kids for success in a challenging cultural, environmental and political climate. The unique class offered to high school students “Values in American/World Thought” is eye opening and in combination with the Junior year DC trip and Senior year trip to India there is nothing else like it that I have come across. There is a core of incredibly dedicated individuals, both staff, teachers, and administrators whose top priorities are the education and wellbeing of the students as well as the wider MMS community. We feel truly blessed to be a part of Mount Madonna School.

When we found Mount Madonna School, we were DONE with the public school system for our child. After years of struggling socially, our family got to the point where we couldn't take one more minute of the environment our child was navigating daily. We were hesitant to check out MMS because I was afraid I was going to love it and not be able to afford it. When we visited, it was much more than we ever thought it would be. The social, academic (admin, teachers, and staff), and community aspects of this school are like nothing I have ever experienced before. The icing on the cake? Its campus is one of the most beautiful I've seen with frequent visits from wild turkey and deer. Mount Madonna boasts of an inclusive, accepting, kind, and respectful atmosphere. This was hands down our biggest draw to this school. We were looking for a place for our child to figure out and navigate the years where they are trying to figure out who they are and where they fit in the world. Our child was not emotionally safe in the local public school despite the school's hard work to try to support our family. We did not leave public school for lack of caring staff. They cared, they were just underfunded, outnumbered, and understaffed. At Mount Madonna my child has formed a social circle, albeit small, but it is mighty. The small classes (HUGE academic benefit-more on that in a minute) force the children to learn how to problem solve and resolve conflict. Admin and teachers are very responsive to any problems that may arise, they help the kids reach a resolution, and they do so in a timely manner. My child went from a withdrawn child, to one that is outgoing and loves going to school everyday. For those looking for academic excellence, you will not be disappointed. The small class sizes make it virtually impossible for your child to fall through the cracks. The teachers, staff, and admin know every child by name. They care about them and their success. They are dedicated to helping your child and offer academic rigor. The community of this school is second to none. The school director is intelligent, empathetic, and dedicated to the school's mission. It's clear she works very hard connecting and keeping all the moving parts together to make it what it is. Schools like this don't happen by accident. It takes a group of dedicated people (families included) to join together for a common purpose, and this school has done just that. We are so, so happy.

Our extended family has children at various levels of Mount Madonna School. The children have thrived academically, which was very important to us. The oldest is now at a selective college and enjoying his rigorous classwork. As important is the individual support students receive to start projects of their own design and follow them through to completion. The support available from staff is significant and always amazing. Our children have learned to perform and speak in public; and to find the ways everyone can contribute using their individual skillset. There is interaction between various levels of school which benefits upper grades and lower grades equally. The staff is fully committed to the students and to the school. They know each individual student and are always there to help and offer support if needed. In the beginning I could not believe this school had the ability to deliver on the promises but through the years it has been an endless series of pleasant revelations and promises kept.No person and no school is perfect but this one has all the basics in place and a superior and committed staff to make a fully balanced academic and social-emotional education a reality. And none of this even mentions the astonishing physical site where children are offered this exceptional learning experience. We are all so happy we found this unique learning center.

We have two daughters who have been at Mount Madonna School for 5 years and we love it. They started in elementary and are now in high school. MMS is very small (average class size probably 10-12 kids), so there are pros and cons to that. I am a bit surprised by recent reviews because I feel the administration has been actively improving in the last year or so - but it has required some change which isn’t always easy. Regardless, here are the pros and cons as I see them - hoping this helps other families make the best decision for them.PROS: By FAR the best thing about MMS is the community. The administration, teachers, parents and students get to know each other well, and care about each other more than I have witnessed at any other school. You see this in small things like carpooling and feeding each other’s kids before a volleyball match, to big things like pulling together during a storm to ensure a show goes on or everyone makes it home safely. The MMS community is hands down the most resilient, caring group our family has ever been a part of. 2) Empathy, inclusivity and respect - I can honestly say I have never met a kinder group of kids, more accepting of different personalities and abilities. Kids get to know each other very well - and even those who might not ordinarily be friends, learn to work together and see the good that each student brings. 3) VERY low teacher to student ratio allows for lots of individual attention and flexibility for older students to pursue topics that interest them. We are college-educated and feel confident our daughters will be equipped to move on to the college of their choice. 4) Gorgeous campus with lots of outdoor time (and NO PHONES during the school day.) We consider this a huge win. 5) Incredible performing arts program - amazing for building confidence.CONS: Any MMS family will likely say they'd like to see more kids attend because that means more sports, more friends, bigger proms, etc. If your kid is keen to play high school sports, MMS might not be the best fit - they offer some (volleyball, cross country, even soccer this year!) but most athletes play club sports outside. Our students are great at making things happen - three years back they decided to host the first prom, and they have gotten bigger and better every year since. MMS does have a co-op feel - it takes some time/effort from every family to make it all happen. This makes us enjoy and appreciate it even more, but might not work for everyone.

Current admin is so insanely toxic. The head of school gossips about teachers and current families with their “friends” in the office who are also parents of students at the school. Which also means the kids of said employees are held at a different standard so if they bully your child, tough luck. It’s beautiful and they will try to sell you on that but it’s not as it seems. Stay for prek, leave for the rest. You’ll be sold a bill of goods that they are unable to deliver. That means all kids are welcome which is wonderful but none have the support they deserve and desperately need but the teachers will be blamed if anything goes wrong and the admin will plead ignorance. Your kid will be forced into “creative theater” whether they like it or not and most rehearsals will take place during school hours on your dime. Oh and at least 60% of the student body gets some sort of financial aid but idiversity-wise you wouldn’t know it. you’ll still be asked once a month at least to fundraise or give money. It feels like very expensive homeschool coop since most of the staff have kids at the school. Education is super uneven. This place has lost its way. We’d leave now but signed a contract so we’re stuck until after this year. Would def reconsider if they’d make a change in administration. Btw any positive reviews were begged for monthly via the newsletter to current t families. Don’t buy it.

I have two children in the elementary school and cannot say enough good things about Mount madonna. Apparently I can’t consider sending them anywhere else, since my kids said they never want to leave and honestly I can’t even imagine doing so. They are close to their classmates that they are more like family. The community environment and vibe is very supportive. I hope to keep them here through high school.

I would not recommend this school. There are limited systems of supports, curriculum and high turnover of staff. There is limited retention of students due to unhealthy school climate.

I was super disappointed with the school's lack of clear educational philosophy and the poor communication from long time teachers. My family went there and I pulled my daughters out of the school mid-year due to some very serious gaps in the school's integrity. It is a long drive from anywhere (which gets tiresome very fast). It's expensive and the education did not prove superior to most schools. The administration gave me lots of lip service about addressing issues I brought up but they were absolutely negligent in addressing them. It was a disappointing experiment in our educational choices. I can't have my time, money ,and energy back but I am grateful my kids are now at a competent school and thriving!

Very disappointed in Mount Madonna. They are extremely expensive and you get a better education at most public schools. My son is currently there and I will say, it is a big mistake.

I have two children that graduated from MMS. Besides the beautiful, safe and caring environment they were able to grow up in, they both received a quality education. Furthermore, it taught them to think for themselves and to participate in class. As a result one graduated with a double major from UC Davis and the other has a double major and double minor in her junior year of university.

One of the most remarkable aspects of Mount Madonna School is its enormous heart, which is palpable in every facet of its operations. It's not just a place of instruction; it's a sanctuary of compassion and understanding. The staff and educators go above and beyond to ensure that each student feels valued, heard, and supported. This dedication to nurturing not just the intellect but also the emotional and social development of the students creates an environment where individuals can truly flourish. At its core, Mount Madonna School embodies the spirit of caring deeply. This care goes beyond academics; it extends to personal growth, character development, and the well-being of each student. The emphasis on fostering a sense of belonging and acceptance within the student body cultivates an atmosphere where diversity is celebrated and every individual is embraced for their unique qualities. This inclusive mindset doesn't just stop at the student level; it permeates through the entire community, creating a space where collaboration and understanding thrive. The concept of a community of lifelong learners is not merely a catchphrase at Mount Madonna School; it's a way of life. The educators, administrators, and students alike are united by a shared passion for constant growth and exploration. Learning isn't confined to the classroom; it extends into every facet of the Mount Madonna experience. The emphasis on curiosity, critical thinking, and adaptability prepares students not just for exams, but for life itself. What truly sets Mount Madonna School apart is its commitment to nurturing its staff and faculty. The institution recognizes that educators are the cornerstone of a transformative education, and it provides them with the space and resources to grow in their own capacities. This empowerment translates into educators being able to design curricula that resonate with their passions and expertise. As a result, students are exposed to subjects that are taught with genuine enthusiasm, breathing life into their learning journey.

MMS is not quite as it seems. The campus is beautiful and the school mission system reads well: It is aspirational, visionary, and hopeful. The students are lovely and complex, like all student body populations. However, the administration is incredibly opaque about the reality of day-to-day life at the school. On a daily basis, students are rushed from activity to activity. They are overly managed and over stimulated. Teachers are over worked and underpaid, even though they are generally passionate, experienced, and empathetic. There is, in fact, a shocking employee turn over, including teachers. The school cannot afford to pay for the full compliment of teachers and staff, so they overload the employees they have, who in turn burn out. What’s worse, there is much nepotism and entrenched personalities who are protected and rewarded for unprofessional behavior. This reality keeps this cycle of burn out spinning because power players are not motivated to address systemic issues. You will find a polished surface if you go looking for reviews of MMS. They have a hard-working media team, but they are under enrolled. There is a reason for that. When students, teachers, and staff leave at this rate, it’s time to check system operations. Buyer beware.

From very subpar facilities in the liwer school ( including no heats in some cmassrooms) to grade infkatiin and lack of rigor in the upper school, school busses that constantly break down, and toxic work environment, this school is not worth the exorbitant tuition charged.Do your research before applying. Quality staff are leaving for a reason.

With two children attending this school, I wholeheartedly recommend Mount Madonna School. The academic environment is rigorous and supportive. The teachers are highly educated. With one child in the lower school, the level of education of the mind and the heart has been invaluable. With one child in the upper school, the academic environment is rigorous and still supportive of these developing young adults. The integration of the Technology-Engineering-Art , Performing Arts, and Digital Arts has creates a rich environment. The campus is beautiful. The busing system is very help for transportation. The parent community is supportive and inclusive. I highly recommend this school.

The location is unquestionably one of the most beautiful places in the world. And there’s care from the faculty. Still, the financial investment as well as the drive, for my family were definitely not worth what they provide. Despite their impressive representation on social media and well executed school tours, there were numerous substantial incongruencies between what they say they provide and what they are in reality. There’s a vast discrepancy between their façade (what I saw at their public events and theatrical productions) and what they are. Their education is not as good as public school and not as holistic or creative as other alternative schools. There’s a LOT more I want to say but am hesitant to get too involved here. I would just say look a bit deeper than the surface if you’re considering sending your child to this school and really consider deeply why you’re doing it.

My daughter has been at Mount Madonna School since preschool and is now in second grade. My son is currently in the preschool class. Our experience has been wonderful and I can’t say enough positive things about the early education and elementary programs at MMS. The school is small and has a community orientated culture. The campus is beautiful as well as serving as an amazing outdoor classroom. My kids spend a good part of their week hiking through the redwood forest or learning science in the children’s garden. I also appreciate the way children learn to resolve conflicts and communicate effectively with each other, as well as the big buddy program where older students are paired as mentors and friends with younger students. I was impressed by the hard work if the teachers and administration during the pandemic and remote learning to make things work realistically and with compassion. Both my kids love their school.

Our children have been at Mount Madonna School since 2016, when they were 3 and 5 - and are now in 1st and 3rd grade. Four years in, our daughter and son are thoroughly in love with their school and so are we. Not only are the children thriving with kind and stimulating friendships, but we also have met many wonderful families with whom our lives are now enmeshed. My husband and I are both educators working in our community in south county Santa Cruz, which is culturally and socio-economically diverse. We chose MMS because we care about equity and inclusivity, and we want to pace our childrens' academic lives with character development. In our community, we found that graduates of MMS were very diverse young humans who were empowered, had self-recognizance, were exceptionally mature, grounded, and capable of having confident, natural interactions with adults, and we were like wow! What is this place all about? And we find from the earliest years that this path indeed happens, biodynamically, at Mount Madonna School. In these chaotic times, we are glad to see that the staff at MMS consistently participate in cultural competence trainings, and teachers create unique opportunities for the students to learn about and participate in social justice perspectives and to become protectors of the environment. Science, math, philosophy and literature all coincide with this immersive approach in a stunning natural setting. Students have the opportunity to balance classroom time with time outdoors taking in the earthly wisdom of the beautiful 380 acre campus in the redwoods. Families at Mount Madonna come from the "oceanside" near Santa Cruz and also from Silicon Valley and adjacent areas like Morgan Hill and Gilroy. We have a very international community of families here, and heritage is celebrated through various events during the year like Cultural Awareness Assembly, Ramayana, the Winter Concert, and more. Here is a learning environment that is freer than most schools from competition, comparison, and undue stress and anxiety that can often waylay the natural appetite for learning. This is partially due to the grace of smaller student-teacher ratios and the more intimate community environment where students feel and look out for each other. We are so grateful to be immersed in a learning journey that is supported by the visions of the clearly talented, dedicated staff and administrators who steer the school, which is now in it's 45th year.

I chose Mount Madonna not only for its excellent academic curriculum, but perhaps more importantly for its human curriculum.Mount Madonna students learn by experience and by the example of the adults around them, who model how to be human in the best way possible: in thoughtful, caring community where each student is truly seen and heard. We had an excellent experience throughout our many years here. Of course, not *everything* went my way, but in every way that matters most, the school has shined. My students are well prepared for life, have strong ongoing friendships, and a broad view of what is needed from them as contributors in the world.
