I have been a student here at howland since second grade. I have been bullied by some of the staff and teachers. In the middle school bulling is the worst and caused me trauma and depression. I was a little bigger than most of the kids and got called names for being a little bigger. The teachers were mostly kind and caring but the students on the other hand were not. I started to have an eating disorder and lost an unhealthy amount of weight in about 2 mounths. I had lost about 60lbs and had to see a doctor. When I got to the high school at least %80 of the kids smoked and were always in the restroom. Now that I am an upperclassman I have seen it get worse over the years. I no longer get bullied but a majority of the kids who can’t afford designer clothing or sneakers, or kids with a disability, or kids at certain sizes do get made fun of and it’s terrible. Whenever I try to report something to the vice principal/principal nothing ever gets done. Some of the teachers have favorites and especially if they are athletic. Kids who are athletic at this school don’t ever get introuble but they are the ones who bully others. I have also realized that some of the teachers will help you try to bring your grades up by giving you extra bonus work, which is great! But some of the teachers leave it for you to figure it out yourself. The cafeteria food is also usually cold and gross. I like howland but they need to do more about the problems this school/ schools have. It is a nice school but it could do better.

I've been a student at Howland sence first grade. Iv'e been in the high school for three years. In my personal experience, the bullying in the school is a huge issue that doesn't seem to be acknowledged. I personally was bullied and nothing was done about it, in spite of the multiple times i told the principle/vice principle, counselors, and teachers. My parents had to take me out of school for a period of time due to how bad the bullying actually got. I am not the only student that this has happened to. I feel that not enough is being done to handle these situations. Like every high school, there will always be victims of bullying, but it should be handled instead of brushing it off. It is not the worst school, but it could do a lot better. I also agree with many of the comments that stated it is a school very focused on sports. Which for many students is great but for the students who are not particularly active or good at sports it can be difficult to "fit it" with the students here. The school has many AP and honors classes and also offers extra help to students who may need it. The majority of the teachers are very kind, understanding, and helpful. Although, some of the teachers are not like that. A lot of the students have absolutly no repect for the staff, the students, or anyones property. Overall, Howland isn't the worst school but it needs to improve on many things.

There have been three different people in my family to go through this school system and none of us have had a good experience.(We're all incredibly different in personality and style) Granted it's high school and it's not suppose to be a fun experience; however I can say this. If you are from a lower class to lower middle class family, if your child is more on the socially awkward spectrum, and your family can't afford designer clothes or your child can't play sports amazingly. They'll either be uncared for, or teased and made to feel bad about themselves by the other students, as it is a mostly upper middle class to upper class school that focuses a lot on sports. If you're lower-class and can't play sports you'll need thick skin to get through it, and a whole lot of self esteem.

Overall it is a good school comparatively though it used to be absolutely great!!!! Despite the teachers that don't deserve to be there either because they are too old or out of touch, lack of experienced teacher, not enough teachers to teach valuable classes like languages and honors classes, maybe don't have a passion for teaching or caring about the students or are inept all together and the school funding, Howland still seems to push out some terrific kids with a good education that prepares them well enough for college. Through 12 years with one child and another 3 to go with another, I have seen an obvious and gradual decline in the education program at our school. I hope something is done quickly or we will no longer be considered one of the best, if not the best school in Trumbull County. It is starting to appear as though TCTC is the wave of the future and a better opportunity for our children. Thank God we are now connected to this instead of Ashtabula.

As a graduate of HHS and current college student I have nothing but good things to say about Howland. I feel very prepared for college. Comments about bullying just seem completely untrue. Generally speaking both students and teachers at Howland really do care about one another. Academics, sports and other clubs are highly valued by students, and there really are great opportunities for everyone.

I resent the fact some parents that submitted reviews said "Howland is a bunch of rich kids...", "The children who attend the school are notably unwelcoming and judgemental..." & "any parent who wishes for their child to be able to be educated well in a good environment avoids Howland." Well I attended Howland and my kids attend howland. We are not rich and my kids attended a Catholic school til attending Howland High in 9th grade. They were both accepted and are doing just fine. My son is in Honors Math and is pushed to excell in his classes. I expect students be pushed when in honors, that's why they are there. My daughter graduated with a certificate in Multi Media (photography and videography). Where else locally can this be achieved except at a vocational school? They have so many elective classes offered at the high school... Multi Media, Programming, Web Design, Marketing, Publishing just to name a few. Yes a lot of attention is placed on football but what school doesn't. Howland High school is also has been EXCELLENT for the past 6 years!!! YES I'M PROUD TO BE A HOWLAND ALUMNI AND EVEN PROUDER TO HAVE MY CHILDREN ATTEND HOWLAND!!!

Horrible problems with bullying no one does anything swept under the rug. God for bid if its an athlete doing the bullying not even a slap on the wrist. Nothing but a bunch of rich kids with a better than now complex. Moving ASAP this school is not worth going too unless you are the star football player.
