Our son started in 9th grade and is a senior now. His experience to date has been everything a parent would want for their child - making lifelong friends, rigorous academics with supportive teachers and community, opportunities to think outside the box, organically developing areas of new interests, engaging opportunities for both academic discovery and personal growth, and most importantly in a caring environment where your child learns to be kind because others are as well.

Choate is a sick, backwards place. The kids here are decidedly less mature than their counterparts in public and private day schools, which is to be expected because they live in a strange bubble. The teachers are burned out, and there is no community or comraderie whatsoever at this school. It has an awkardly large student population which discourages faculty really "getting to know kids" as at other boarding schools. And, as other have noted, it is far less "traditional" than other schools, which leads to it being the bizarre combination of very privileged with an urban, but hyper liberal progressive feel. It's difficult to explain, but it does not make for a pleasant place. Indeed, it is a very cold place, easy for kids to get lost at. Students here really don't like each other, more so than at public schools where people tend to just ignore those they don't know. The idea that one would obtain a "great education" here is absolutely moronic. Short of being on scholarship and in the special science program of some 6 kids per class, this is just the typical rote memorization of nonsense, learn nothing program to be found at any other American school, except with no community whatsoever and teachers who care far less.

My daughter is in her first year and thriving in this challenging but very supportive environment. She would have never received the degree of individual attention and concerned support from teachers/administrators in her previous (public) school. The selection of courses rivals a good college, particularly in the French Department. Going to Choate has been a great experience for my daughter and as a parent I feel grateful she has this opportunity. She has also made a wonderful group of friends.

I have two Sons who currently attend Choate. It has been a great experience. My Boys are eager to return to school from break (they are boarding). The campus is quite diverse, my oldest son's best friend is from Kenya. The workload is demanding and most kids do not earn A's. The mathematics program is especially rigorous. If you have a child that is not challenged at his current school I would consider Choate. If your child is self-motivated and very mature he/she will love the Choate environment. If this is not the case, don't inflict the stress and work that applying to a school like this inflicts on a kid. There are many other better choices for kids who are "late bloomers" or need to do remedial work.
