GATE Academy is an amazing school. The academics, faculty and administration are wonderful, supportive, encouraging and highly educated and immensely competent. Our son has been at this school since starting his journey as a student and has flourished. Having worked for many other bay area and northern California K-8 schools, junior colleges, UC Office of the President, individual UC and State institutions, well as, other fine educational programs, GATE stands apart as exceptional, which is why it has earned the coveted WASC accreditation it so very much deserves. There are many special aspects of GATE; the pedagogy, the academic program and the student and parent community. All a wonderful blend of the best things our children need to learn and thrive for the greater world and beyond. GATE's program is a great place for parents who want their children to think big, act with integrity and be contentious contributors to our greater community. I find the faculty and parent community to be second to none. Raising children who can think for themselves, act responsibly with empathy and awareness is the foundation for raising children who go on to lead, encourage others and think big like entrepreneurs.

GATE Academy is unlike any other school we’ve experienced. The culture is exceptionally warm, encouraging, and kind, creating an environment where children of all ages feel valued and supported. From the youngest students to the oldest, you see a genuine sense of camaraderie and celebration, whether it’s during their unique birthday appreciations or school-wide project presentations. Even 8th graders go out of their way to encourage and high-five the youngest kids, fostering a tight-knit, uplifting community.Academically, GATE stands out with its rigorous, project-based learning model. Every six weeks, students present their work to the entire school, building confidence, critical thinking, and communication skills. These aren’t just assignments—they’re opportunities for kids to grow, discover, and develop their voices. Our children have flourished here in ways we never thought possible, engaging deeply with both the material and the process. What truly sets GATE apart is its thoughtful, progressive approach to technology. The school teaches students to use tech as a tool for creation and growth while fostering responsible habits and digital literacy. They collaborate with parents to ensure kids understand both the power and the risks of technology, preparing them to thrive in a tech-driven world. GATE is more than a school; it’s a community where children grow academically, socially, and emotionally—and we couldn’t be happier to be part of it.

My son attended GATE from the fall of 2020 to April of 2024. The academics and teachers are great. The parent community is kind. Unfortunately the administration is incompetent. One week after offering us a spot for the 2024/2025 school year, the school withdrew their offer. They said our son was struggling with emotional issues and that “they couldn’t help him anymore.” There was nothing that happened between giving us an offer and rescinding it, so it didn’t make sense. And while I can understand where the school was coming from—he was starting new ADHD meds which can be hard—the way they managed his enrollment was unprofessional and just plain weird. Some examples:1. They never included our son’s core teacher in their decision. His core teacher told us that she was confused by the whole thing. 2. The school doesn’t have grades, rather they use red/yellow/green for bad/okay/good in evaluations. Apparently our son was struggling socially more than we were made aware. When I asked, “why didn’t he get any red checks?” We were told, “Oh, we don’t give those. Parents read the evaluations to their kids.” 3. The administration said our son was struggling in math. In a conference with his math teacher, she said he was doing just fine.4. Our plan was to finish the year out at GATE and work with his teacher now that we were made aware of the depth of his challenges. A few weeks into this plan we were told we couldn’t talk to his teacher any more because she was too busy. His teacher told us to contact her outside of school channels.5. Blocking us from our son's teacher was the last straw, so we left the school mid-year. We asked for a prorated portion of our tuition back because of how we had been treated. Were offered 1/4 of what we were due (a partial admission of guilt), but only if we signed an NDA. There is so much more, but this gives a sense of our experience.I waited to write this review until we had some time in our new school, so I could have a point of comparison. What we have found in his new school is a professionalism that we didn’t realize was missing so gravely at GATE. Our son is thriving (although a little bored academically). It turns out GATE’s inadequacy in managing the social environment made our son anxious, and that’s why he was acting out. It’s not some miraculous change in him that has him thriving. It’s that his new school is run by professionals. GATE, on the other hand, is run by people who are very bad at their jobs.

I've worked for GATE Academy for a long time. I am extremely passionate about its mission and am inspired by the Head of School and her ability to ensure that it is carried out. GATE Academy students are academically motivated, they ask questions and are engaged learners. The teachers understand and welcome this immense challenge. They work brilliantly as a team to foster and instill excellent learning habits that allow students to reach their potential in all areas of interest. The location is an added bonus as the beauty that surrounds us is extraordinary.

I attended GATE Academy from Kindergarten through 8th grade. It is an extraordinary school, with a warm-hearted community. I'm currently entering my senior year in college, and help out at GATE during my summers at home. The school has positively impacted me, being a place that cares for students and gives them a chance to push themselves to the best of their ability. They promote inclusion, persistence, and thoughtfulness. The teachers are delightful, as they pour 100% into their work, providing proper challenges for the students. The size of the school is small, which adds to its charm. Everyone is accepting of one another, which makes the process of befriending others simpler. Personally, the school prepared me for the rest of my educational journey. If I need to give a presentation or write a structured paper, I appoint credit to GATE for prepping me as a young student for these tasks in my adult education. Overall the school is remarkable, and I recommend it to any family looking for the right education for their gifted child.

My son attended GATE Academy after being unserved and underserved in the Marin public school system. He thrived incredibly at GATE, where his passion and excitement about the world was matched by other kids with great enthusiasm and inquisitiveness. I still remember his first day at school, watching him rush up the stairs laughing with other students who were "arguing" about the wingbeat rate of hummingbirds just like it was a baseball card statistic. Being with other kids who love to explore and learn, and who want to engage with each other, is to my mind the most magical part of GATE. I have seen it bring withdrawn children out of their shells, and seen kids who came in frustrated (by not being or being with peers) met calm down and dig in. The staff at GATE is exceptional at being "guides on the side" and helping kids learn HOW to learn and explore and think, not cramming them full of what and should and "I said so", while also helping with ever so important social emotional skills in this difficult day and age. After COVID, I have seen that GATE has been wonderful at giving kids support in growing past the isolation and anxiety of that very difficult time. GATE's administration is excellent at interfacing one-on-one confidentially with parents about any challenges, and coming up with strategies to help kids learn in a real-life social emotional setting with other kids, not driven by online learning.

Our family has been at GATE almost but not quite throughout. The gifted & talented label can mean different things to different people; like all labels, this can sometimes be a challenge... but maybe one we can live with. In middle school, a lot of guidance, critique, and effort goes into the 'inquiry period' project and presentations. I do not like to emphasize work product, but it is often remarkable. Our experience at this phase has been that instruction, classroom management, writing, Science, and the ability of the educators and staff to see the students is solid. They work together as a team, engage in professional development, and like each other. The teachers are experienced and skilled.During COVID we had a window into what they were doing via proactive response to remote learning: we got robust, advanced instruction by an individual impressive in every respect. Another, who provided what I judge to be thought-provoking, seminar-level Art, now teaches the younger classes. The PE teacher plays a very low-key but indispensable role. The selection of staff & specialists seems to be thoughtful and purposeful. From my student, there is hunger for a whole-subject, survey-type approach. The project-based approach popular everywhere does not address sequential, semester-long views into subjects like History or Civics, but I suppose that will happen in high school. Here, it seems to be about finding one's voice while making deep dives into subjects.Math here generates a lot of energetic discussion. In middle school and elementary, they are/were different beasts, requiring different avenues of approach. Peers and returning alums are good at engaging interest, and there is a dedicated Math teacher. They are transitioning to a different platform at the moment, and I think there are larger questions about the directions in STEM & education policy happening and state and national level going on. There is an aversion to the presence of devices / media platforms to keep distractions with intent on boundaries but also constructive use of technology. They seem to be pretty informed.GATE recently stepped onto the stage with accreditation - apparently, reviewers came through impressed.

Having joined GATE months before the pandemic, we had enough time in school for my child to build a solid relationship with his teacher and were impressed with their adaptability when we moved to out-schooling. Our child’s teacher Arin Wiscomb was profoundly adept in educating gifted children and made learning a fun and interactive process. Sadly, when we moved back into school, the cracks in the foundation of the school started to become more apparent. Staff turnover was common during the pandemic, but the revolving door of teachers and specialists has been a problem at the school and continues to be so. Once Arin Wiscomb left, the school seemed to lose its ability to meet the needs of the children. After further exploration, the school is not only not accredited and most of the teachers are not credentialled. Academically, children are left to their own devices to learn. One of the selling points of the school was the idea of children learning with their academic peers during “math time”. Children are self-taught and when questions arise for teachers, the response to my child was “re-read the instructions” rather than the instructor teaching. The lack of academic structure makes it impossible to measure where your student is academically.Grade levels are not assigned to a child and students are placed into a cohort based on age. This does not always hold true though as children are moved up year-round. There was no clear, measurable reasoning for a child moving up and without clearly defined metrics, children and parents alike are often left wondering what needs to happen for a child to be advanced. Outside of academics, the school’s ability to address issues with students is equally rife with issues. Children are rarely disciplined and when they are, months can go by without parents even being made aware of an issue. My child was unable to concentrate in a class of eight children because other students were talking over the teacher, rolling on the floor, standing on chairs, and chewing on various items. The lack of respect among the student population was rarely addressed and when a teacher tried to work on this, the teacher was the one who was admonished. Overall, this may or may not be the right “fit” for your child, but GATE is a business and not an educational institution. If you’re looking for a well-rounded education with measurable academics and a supportive social environment, you may want to keep looking as this was not our experience.

In our short tenure at the local public school, we quickly saw that our daughter’s unique way of learning would be ill-served in a traditional classroom environment. She was not able to go as deep or focus on aspects of the curriculum that truly interested her. As a result, we could see a building frustration in her that was not a good way to start her learning path in K/1. We decided to explore alternatives and found GATE.After her “sample day” at the school, our daughter came home energized, and talked for hours about how interesting the classroom was and how the other kids were “really” talking to each other. The positive energy and spark from her few hours at GATE were very telling to us, and we decided to enroll. That was 20 months ago, and we believe it was one of the best decisions we have made related to the academic and social development of our daughter. The energy remains and her enthusiasm for learning has grown. Here are some quick reflections:•Her teachers know who she is, how she learns and how to challenge her; there’s a huge benefit from the student:teacher ratio at GATE•While the quality of the individual teachers at the school is incredible, it is reflective of the broader culture at GATE: they encourage investigation, collaboration, communication, support, personal ownership and leadership•The interaction between the kids in the upper-classes and the younger kids is inspiring; I see real sense of stewardship that the older kids have in the school•Parent engagement is great – we have developed some very close friendships with other GATE parents; it does feel like a community

Like many other families, our child tried other schools before landing at GATE Academy. She was struggling, wanting more academics and peers who took learning seriously. Once she started at GATE, she made many solid friendships and reports feeling challenged. She is a self-motivated learner and her research skills have blossomed as well as her writing skills. Math is a favorite subject and she appreciates the teaching style of the new math teacher. The director is warm, compassionate, and professional. Overall we are really pleased with our GATE experience!

What a relief. After a couple of difficult years we finally found the perfect school for our daughter, and our family. Previously our daughter was underwhelmed academically at "one of the best public schools in Marin" and overwhelmed emotionally with 28 children in a loud, unfocused classroom. As a preschooler, she skipped to school every day. In first grade, she clung to me desperately saying "mommy don't leave me here, this is not the right school for me." Heartbreak. When she had her trial days at GATE she ended by telling everyone "this is the school for me." And she was right. She is now in her third year at GATE, and loves it so much. Her teachers have all been very engaging, the other children equally interested in learning (and playing!), and the administrators and Head of School very supportive and accessible. While the school does not boast an equestrian center, dozens of activities, and flashy resources, what it does it does well: teaching cognitively gifted kids. Through an inquiry based approach, the children take a deep dive into a topic, research extensively, learn to ask questions, and at the end of the 6-week period they present on their topic of choice. My daughter loves presentations, and I am amazed to see the quality and depth of learning that occurs each time I attend presentations. At the end of the inquiry there is a break of two or occasionally three weeks, and then they are on to a new inquiry and the process repeats in a year round fashion. Our entire family loves the year around schedule: there are lots of breaks, no summer slide, and kids are excited to return to school for a new inquiry. We've found our community here, with many close friendships for children and adults.

We were so excited to try Gate Academy and the new learning opportunities. We tried the summer session as a way to get to know the school and the community before attending in the fall 2021/2022.Unfortunately, from day 1 there were cultural differences, no orientation, no onboarding buddy to help navigate the new world. I was in regular communication with the staff in an effort to ease the transition. After 3 weeks, we (me, my child, and the staff) realized that there wasn’t much else we could do. My child just didn’t fit in with the classmates and was unhappy. He did enjoy the project, but it wasn’t enough.Ordinarily, I would have given it much longer to try and make it work, but I had paid $3k for the summer session (34 school days), plus a $1k registration fee.I tried to get a refund for the partial summer that my child attended, but that was denied. They didn’t explain why. I knew the registration fee was non refundable per the documentation. Sadly, I paid $4k just to try the school, and that is a lot of money for 34 school days!Warning to prospective parents:Before signing any contracts with Gate Academy, ensure you have an agreed upon non-refundable and pro-rated refundable exit fee.Good luck!

On the interpersonal side, this school is a friendly and supportive environment for gifted children, and we have found almost all staff members to be caring, creative and hard-working. On the academic side, we have found the program less rigorous than expected, and our advice would be to check that the Math instruction in particular would suit your child. While some children are happy taking themselves through a workbook at their own pace, others (not unreasonably) would respond better to more direct instruction than is typically on offer here. This is in contrast to the non-Math subjects, where instruction seems to be more direct and hands-on, and (pre-Covid) has included guest speakers and field trips to help bring the Inquiries to life.

This school has changed my daughter’s life. After years at two of the other best Marin private schools, this is where she has blossomed. She no longer feels compelled to dumb herself down and it’s such a beautiful thing to see.

For my daughter, GATE has absolutely proven to be the right place at the right time. She was so bored and unhappy at her old school that she would get stomach aches and cry every night at bedtime for days in advance whenever a vacation was drawing to a close and she knew she had to go back soon (and it is a tremendous school in so many ways -- her older brother continues to be very happy there). Even though she has had a few (expected) periods of stress adjusting to the workload, making new friends, getting the routines down, and making her peace with walking/running a mile every week in PE (she does not feel herself to be particularly aerobically inclined!), she has never once asked to return to her old school or told me she thinks she may have made a mistake in transferring. She is consistently happy when I drop her off, happy (though often tired) when I pick her up, obviously intellectually challenged (thank goodness!!!), and at ease socially -- instead of shrinking into herself, avoiding eye-contact, and beelining for the car as quickly as possible, she calls out and waves to her peers, who all wave back, and sometimes stop for hugs -- that alone is worth the price of admission! GATE has restored her confidence, curiosity, courage to be her authentic self, and enthusiasm for learning (and life in general!). I am profoundly grateful!

Moving to GATE was the right choice for our family. The community has been welcoming and our son calls GATE his "other home". We came from a very strong public school district where we liked our teachers and our son still has many friends. For gifted students, there is no better education in Marin than GATE.

We spend several hours to drive to the school from Petaluma on a daily basis and we wouldn't want our son to be anywhere else. Other families come from as far away as Sonoma, San Francisco, and Berkeley to attend this special school. Finding a school which helps develop children into meeting their full potential is rare indeed.

Can a school be reviewed, probably not because whether a school is good really depends on your child's requirements. We came from a school whose approach was definitely not for our child. Is it perfect, no, but overall it is a very good fit for us. I'm sure it would be possible to find somebody with a negative opinion on the GATE as you will find in any school. We have certainly found it far more productive to engage with the school rather than hit social media to the detriment of the community which depends upon its school. Importantly the mission, professionalism and intent of the school and its staff strongly resonate with our philosophy on education.

Overall great. Each teacher has their strengths. This is not a school for everyone. You need to be an engaged parent looking out for the needs of kids who need more stimulation and challenges. This school pro ided what we were not able to get in a classroo. With 21 other kids who had a wide variety of levels of preparedness. This is a group of kids whose intellectual curiosity is ama,ing ro be around. Perfect kids? Nope. Perfwcr school? Nope. But we are really happy and so are our kids. We live in the dixie school district which is a Good one and still pay to go here. Many other kids commute from up to an hour away to participate in this school. I would say that might just be its greatest flaw, that so Many.kids dont just live down the street like if we went to the local school. But we plan on attendin tk-8 rh grade... it is our best investment.
