My daughter has been very happy at Gateway. The teachers are devoted to their jobs and the kids. The support we get there is exceptional. The co principals are amazing and this leadership reflects in every way. The kids are happy there and are good to eachother. Gateway is a gem for our community. I love this school.

I am very excited to share that our son is currently a freshman at Gateway High School. We cannot rave enough about what an amazing experience it has been for him and for our family. Our son previously attended a K-8 school and we were very concerned that the transition to high school would be a difficult one. From the moment we attended the open house at Gateway, we felt right at home. The administration, teachers and staff did an outstanding job in creating a warm welcome from the very beginning. Our son has blossomed so much in his freshman year, he enjoys all of his classes and truly appreciates how his teachers embrace the different learning styles of their students. He has made many new friends from different backgrounds and is excited to be a part of such a diverse student body. He feels seen, heard and supported everyday. We are beyond grateful to the administration, teachers and staff who work hard everyday to ensure that every student succeeds and is celebrated for who they are. Gateway High School is a very special and unique school. Our son is very happy, engaged and excited for his future. We feel extremely blessed to call Gateway our amazing school!

We are so fortunate that my daughter gets to attend Gateway high school. She is a special learner, she is queer, and she has never made to feel any different than anyone else. She is supported by her students and teachers in every way possible. She is happy and excited to go to school every day. She’s getting the best grades she’s ever received in her entire school career. The amenities and electives are wonderful. I am so grateful for everyone at Gateway.

Starting with what works well, I'd say the school successfully develops a curriculum that is engaging and relevant to students. Most/many of the teachers are dedicated and enthusiastic, and there is a strong commitment to embracing diversity -- all genders, race/ethnicities and learning abilities. Students who are curious and motivated could do well. Where I think Gateway stumbles is in its handling of lower-performance students. As long as a student does the work, there is a good chance they will be rewarded with an "A" regardless of proficiency. There are many second chances to get an "A" including well after deadlines. And students who are chronic no-shows, or those who fail to acquire their 100 hours of community services still (somehow) graduate. When I questioned teachers about my own student's 25-plus no shows, tardies and unexcused absences, I was reassured that they had "an awesome attendance record." Really. Let's hope their future boss will be as impressed if they continue this habit. The school boasts very high rates of college admission, and with UCs and CSUs currently being "test blind," a Gateway student could earn an impressive GPA, sail through the admissions process, only to find they are struggling, since colleges are less generous with grading and deadline extensions. (Also worth noting: number of Gateway students passing their AP exams is not especially high if I remember correctly.)I get that teens flourish when they feel safe, accepted and encouraged and that telling a student they are "failing" is only going to affect self-esteem and may make them give up. But perhaps a gentle, supportive wakeup call in high school is better than having them drop out of college, because expectations nurtured at Gateway were surpassed by ability and effort.

My child has been really happy and well supported at Gateway. She has a great group of friends and enthusiastic teachers who care about the whole child. Gateway is super diverse and inclusive of all kids and families. We are blessed to be part of the Gateway community.

Questionable ethics. Not responsive to communication. Disappointing leadership .

We are on our third kid going through Gateway, and we have been very happy. The teachers are so dedicated. Tons of support for each kid, making sure the kid gets the best shot possible. 96% of the kids go on to college, and our oldest got into UC easily. I can't say enough about it. Number one thing for us, was the small class size and great mix of kids. It looks like San Francisco. Anybody who gets to attend this high school is getting a golden ticket, in my opinion. Top straight A kids will always do well at SF high schools because they're very good, better than most Bay Area schools. Lowell, Washington, Galileo, Lincoln will get your straight A kid to college, but if your kid falters, they will sink because of the school size and lack of support. Gateway is just smaller, more intimate, and helps every kid of every background and very grade score level rise to the top, have a rewarding learning experience, and go on to college.

For those parents not able to spend $30 - $40k a year for private school in San Francisco, this is a great alternative. GHS is getting better each year as kids from the sister charter middle school enter GHS. GHS has smaller class sizes than in SF public schools and teachers actually care about their students and are linked into an email and online grading system. Like the middle school, GHS students have a code of ethics and a 96% rate of graduates that enter college or university. This is where I will send my children.

My school is okay. There seems to be a lot of racial discrimination and bullying within the campus community. Not everyone treats everyone else fairly. I don't like this though. It seems hard for the teachers to control since they keep on having meetings and gathering the different grades from each house to talk about the specific issues. Besides the racial discrimination, I feel like the diversity is not even getting better. It tends to get worse over time. There are many African American and Latinos here; very few Chinese. How is this diverse??? Oh well. I am going into my senior year and I hope that this school changes in a positive way because I want my last year to be the best. I need it to be the best because I want to get into a good college.

Gateway has great curriculum and a lot of heart. The teachers are challenging and caring. My other kids went to private high schools and I am now wondering why I didn't take a closer look at a wonderful charter school such as Gateway. My son is both gifted and has some learning differences. The teachers have been quick to understand and responsive to his needs and gifts. We love Gateway.
