Over all I would not suggest anyone take their child to this school. It saddly is like any other small town school more concerned with the sports programa then they are the academic programs. It would seem the school has quit a few sponsers and fun rasing programs to keep the sports programs going. Which is great, but I feel they need to put some of the effort into providing a wider range educational programs for the children. On top of that the only art based program that gets funding from anyone is the martching band.

Top notch facilities (in my opinion, the best out of any small school in the state) are the highlight of this school. All athletic programs generally range between mediocre and fantastic. However, academics are a relative weakness at SM, and have been for at least the last decade. SM may have laughably bad academics to the keen observer, but those on the inside seem blissfully unaware of this. To complicate matters further, the locals grow insecure and defensive when challenged on this basis (hence, positive change is difficult to achieve here - as few recognize there are some problems). However, on the bright side, some aspects of the academic culture appear to have improved, even if accidentally, in the last 8-10 years. There have been some brilliant minds that have traversed the halls at SM, but the general anti-intellectual culture in Pleasants County continues to be an achilles heel. However, there is reason to hope that Pleasants County will turn things around in the coming years, and parents could certainly do worse with some of the other surrounding schools.

SMHS and its community just passed a bond to build a new building, something that was very needed. With the unity that the staff and administration shows, the students are rising to higher expectations. Challenging coursework and the constant striving of the teachers to improve and adapt to the 21st Century makes our students competetive once they enter their post-secondary vocations or education venues. The community surrounds and supports their entire school system. One can be proud to be a part of this great "family" in St. Marys.
