My son had a rough time at Turnstone. He had mostly good teachers, his 6th grade teacher was the best we’ve had between all my kids in three different elementary schools. On average, we were pretty satisfied with his teachers at Turnstone. The issue he had was with administration and with supervision during lunch and recess. As a little background, my son has two older brothers and has played competitive sports for years so can be physical, energetic and sometimes on the vocal side. At the same time, he’s highly driven academically, tested on the higher end, advanced math etc. He’s smart enough to know how to behave in class. But when it comes to lunch and recess, he sometimes did the things an energetic boy does… some roughhousing, playing sports physically, etc. Well, there was little to no patience for these couple attributes. My son got literally dozens of citations in the couple years there. There was a strong “tattle tale” culture there so I’m guessing it was something encouraged by the school. Things like running or hitting balls too hard in PE resulted in him, and others, having to sit down the remainder of the class, when exercise was exactly the thing these kids need to burn excess energy before returning to the class… Playing basketball and accidently knocking someone down, carelessly opening a yogurt resulting in splashing some on a neighbor, dropping a slice of pizza on the ground… all these silly things resulting in an email to mom and dad? Crazy.

I think if your teacher is on top of things and the classmates are great, then it will be mostly fine. I had a child that graduated just fine, but this child was never bullied and stayed out of nonsense. If you have a sensitive kid, a sweet kid that thinks all kids are kind, then they will quickly need to speak up for themselves and defend themselves literally. If I had a do-over I would email the Rocklin Family of School Board, and Rocklin Unified school board, and the principal in my complaint emails, because the complaint emails to the principal went in one ear and out the other. Plus, life is too short, we left so I could make my kid's life better.

The teachers lack empathy and my son was bullied at this school.

Classes have way more girls than boys (4 boys in my sons class and 20 girls). Poor classroom materials- you can tell they don't get as much funding as public schools. My child regressed at this school. Kids had 2-3 "siestas" a day (entire class putting their heads on their desk and taking a ten minute nap). A learning station that was often in their rotation was sitting and looking at old worn out books that were 2 grade levels above them (ya that'll encourage them to read!) Teachers are not open to your opinion or suggestions- there is a feeling that you should just be grateful to be there. Never saw the principal out on campus talking to students and parents. Teachers did not give enough opportunity for me to fulfill my volunteer requirement. So much happier with my local public school- makes play dates much easier when their classmates are your neighbors! I feel like my public school is there to serve me and my children and my teachers now are just so much better at their craft. My experience with Rocklin Academy was 4 years ago so hopefully they've improved- but I would never recommend it to anyone.

This a great school, with amazing parent support. Teachers are supportive and encouraging. Curriculum is great, they still have art and music programs for the kids, where as many schools don't offer that anymore. it would be nice if we had our own facility instead of sharing a school site, but it never seems to be an issue.

Rocklin Academy has been a fabulous elementary school experience for my children. The curriculum is rich and the teachers are enthusiastic about their job and make learning fun. There is also a great sense of community. I have always felt like a partner in my children's academic experience. I feel very fortunate to have my children at this school.

This was a great school under the leadership of its founder, Dr. Dave Patterson. Since the loss of Dr. Patterson, due to a misguided board, the school is going downhill. It is now run by the principal, Robin Stout, whose motto is "THE TEACHER IS ALWAYS RIGHT." Her disrespect for parents and students alike is astonishing. She supports even the most outrageous behavior of teachers, and universally denies the simplest requests of parents trying to help their children. She is ruining a great school. I had been unaware of her behavior until one of my children became a special needs child. She has done absolutely everything in her power to ensure that this innocent child's needs are NOT met, even to the point of breaking California law and refusing to provide services required by state law.
