My children were constantly targeted for their race and disabilities. My child is on the high functioning side of the spectrum and reported disturbing comments about his skin color and race made by students and the school did nothing to correct it. My child reported the teachers would yell at children when they were upset and that would scare them. My children overall who loved their previous school began to say they did not want to go to school. The teachers seem burnt out and frankly stuck in the old ways of doing things. They are not kind or understanding to anyone who presents differently than they do, racially, socioeconomically, and in their ability. I do not recommend this school for anyone who is black, poor, or has disabilities. This school will chew you up and spit you out. They have a bias against poor people and assume they’re ignorant and do not care about their children’s education.

My daughter attended Kindergarten and what I would say is she had the best Kindergarten teacher. My overall experience with this school as a parent is I am disappointed. The only positive about the school is her teacher, she is truly an amazing teacher and my husband and I cannot extend our deepest gratitude to her in what she has done as a teacher for our daughter. The school is going under going a change, with a new principal. The staff in the building are rude , I am a big believer it starts with the head, if you set that tone they follow that. Besides my daughter exceptional kindergarten teacher the office staff have to learn kindness with parents. I asked the parent coordinator a question she brushed me off to an office staff and the office staff was so rude. Kindness goes a long way. Where I was disappointed with the school is the school does not do a stepping up ceremony for kindergarteners due to budget and not having enough space. I think it’s a poor excuse being that the kiddos worked so hard and such a big milestone and they don’t get that recognition they deserve. Being that the kiddos went through pandemic and remote learning. This year was the first year of normalcy for the kids , I wish the school would have honored them even with a simple cap and diploma. I hope this changes and P.S 174 offers a stepping up ceremony for all kindergarteners just like other schools in the district offer there Kindergarten students . I would definitely say for any event regarding the school if you want any clarity always reach out to the teacher.

Listen to the reviews of this principal Kelly. She is extremely neurotic, uneducated and disrespectful. She does not know how to speak to her staff - teachers or school nurse respectfully. I’m not surprised to see such a high turnover. Be mindful before enrolling your kids here.

The academic environment is involved and challenging. I enjoyed what I learned from the school. However, when I was a student there, the racism displayed by teachers and administrators was out of control. I would rather pay for private school than send my children to this public school.

Although we have great teachers and principal who care about their students a lot. There are a lot of improvement needed such as knowledge & efficiency of technology, add afterschool programs throughout the whole week, open mind on the usage on new media, etc. Overall the principal and teachers are great and helpful, even during summer, I can still be able to reach out to the main teacher and discuss about things. Hopefully they can keep it up.

I think our experience at this school would be more positive if the principal put more effort into the entire school community. I have seen her lash out at teachers, parents, and students on numerous occasions. I have heard horror stories from other parents about the principal, especially the way she speaks to her staff.

My son is in the first grade G&T class. The teacher really cares about the children. I had the opportunity to sit down while they were in class and it surprised me in a very positive way how the children interact, how challenged they are and how happy they seem to learn. Overall a positive experience.

We have 2 children in the G&T program at this school. The G&T program keeps the kids in the G&T class together from K-5, so they are able to develop strong relationships within the class. The school facilities include a renovated auditorium, a renovated library, a gym, a cafeteria, an art studio, a music studio, a small playground for the kindergarteners and a large school yard. For extracurriculars, there is a dance program for every grade, interesting field trips including visiting the Joyce Theatre and Lincoln Center, and they have art, gym, Stem and library classes every week. Some teachers are more academically focused while others are more emotionally attuned, every year is different and your child will benefit in different ways from the different teachers in their lives. We found that the teachers that we have had are all very passionate about teaching our kids. This isn't the most test score driven or academically focused school in the district, the school takes a more holistic approach with equal emphasis on arts and academics, and our children are generally happy attending this school.

So-so. I hate to give it only 1 star because the teachers are actually not bad, but the administration is terrible to work with, and that means it probably comes from the top.There seems to be little support for working parents. The after school program is a joke - it ends at 4:20pm which is way too early for working families, and is only 2 days a week which doesn't work for working families. Every other school in the district seems to have a real after school program so don't know what the deal is here. There are also no class parents allowed, and parents that try to volunteer are given the third degree by the admin so it's a real turn-off.My kid's class lost 4 kids last year, and seems like the upper classes keep dwindling in numbers. I hear grumblings from other parents Such a shame that the Principal is a neurotic, unstable, and unfriendly person - she could make a real difference but doesn't seem to want to be bothered unless it's a personal pet project.

There is room for improvement, but overall a good experience. Wish there were a more opportunities for parents to get involved and meet other parents in the classroom (we were limited to only 3 parents per field trip), especially for K and 1st grade where all the parents might not know each other.Science Fest was great and seemed to be well-organized, it's obvious that admin and teachers are hard-working and make the effort to get to know the students. Great field trips, and not just limited to locations in Queens. Truly diverse student body in G&T which we really appreciate (at PS 144 G&T, it seems that everyone is either Asian/Indian with a few Caucasians). Our child complains about the lunch food (?). A shout out to the security guard who puts a smile on my child every day.

My son has had positive learning experiences in both kindergarten and first grade G&T at PS 174. The teachers he has had have been nurturing and supportive. Any concerns we’ve had have been addressed in a respectful manner by teachers and administration.

My kid is in Kindergarten G&T and so far enjoys going to school immensely. I find the school to have a very supportive environment.

We had high hopes for 174, especially with our child in the GATE program. But what we realized is that it's a numbers game geared towards getting higher test scores so the school gets more money. It's not really about the kids. Otherwise, why would there be 32 kids with 1 teacher, packed in like sardines? Homework and assignments often go unchecked and there's little individual attention. The teacher does the best she can, but it's really a failing of the administration. But who can blame them, as their budget it tied solely to how well the kids test. It's quite sad! Still, there are good points. Good after-school programs, interesting field trips, and regular social events led by a strong coordinator. However, it's frustrating, as I just feel it could be so much better if the teacher/student ratio was anywhere near manageable. And finally, I do believe there is a problem with how the administration deals with bullying and other foul behaviors. It seems they prefer to keep things quiet and sweep matters under the rug instead of tackling them directly. That's very weak leadership. Parents want transparency and visible action!

It's great neighborhood school. My daughter went there for 4 years before she got into Lous Armstrong middle school. My son is in 4th grade and likes it there. I would not say that he gets plenty of homework but when I feel the he is done with his homework too fast I make him do extra math on computer through 10 Marks that his teacher signed him with. School offers plenty of after school activities . Even though they are not free I hear that many NYC schools don't even offer any after school activities. My son loves going to after school like basketball and chess. This school also offers many trips and I was lucky to go as a parent volunteer parent to Lincoln Center and see ballet Nutcracker and then 4 seasons. Parent coordinator is also great. She is very responsive to parents needs and very organized. The building probably needs renovations but it's not easy to get funds for that. It's not the most important thing . Main hing is that my child is safe there and he is leaning .Overall our family is very pleased with this school .

PS 174 has a lot problem, Music teacher is very mean, she has her favorite students .My kid was trying so hard to get in the programs and the teacher said no to her every time and she was trying so hard going to school 40 minutes early, practicing at home , she never gave chance to be in main role in Disney as well is ballroom dance . One time I complain about food, that my child has pain in her stomach, ass teacher did not let her eat lunch at all. If child not favorite and you don't give present , they going to treat your child the worth. Thank you.
