I have had the worst experience with special education in this school. My child has gotten mis treated by employees and they don't even say anything to the parents. Being that my son is nonverbal autistic, they feel they can talk to my child in all types of ways. They have no patience for kids with disabilities. I do not recommend anyone with a child thats on the spectrum to attend to this school.

As co-founder of the Friends of H.A. Brown I came in knowing how wonderful the school was due to my experience as a student teacher in the Fall of 2011. Many of the teachers and staff have been working at the school since then and some even longer. The low turn over creates a welcoming, comfortable and home-like feel as the students know the teachers from kindergarten through middle school. Principal Carnivale has implemented many important changes that have increased attendance, student attention, and an engaged student community. All students have computer classes, visual art, physical education and music with the opportunity to take string and woodwind instrument lessons. The Friends of Brown and the Home and School Association have been working collaboratively towards fund raising goals and student incentives and events. Volunteers have kept the library open for three years now providing many of the students the opportunity to borrow books, and this year we have added story reading to classes during their library time. The school represents a rich diverse ethnic body between students, teachers and staff. There are many Spanish speakers as well as a range of varying Chinese dialects and Vietnamese being spoken within the building. It certainly takes a village to make this school the diamond in our neighborhood and it is worth it! I am more than excited to be able to enroll my son when he is of age.

This is our second year, now in 1st Grade, at HA Brown and we are delighted with our daughters experience here. Principal Carnivale greets each student by name in the morning with a smile. She is known to be both kind and commanding, and started up our first middle school student body government, which she is especially proud of. There is exceptionally low turnover with the teachers, and they genuinely seem to enjoy working together and collaborating on projects. Many have regular group meet ups after work, and are quick to say yes to fundraiser events hosted by our Friends of HA Brown group and Home and School Association. Its love to see a true mix of both younger and veteran educators working so well together. ALL students have art, music and physical education each week. The hallways are always dripping with art work, and the seasonal musical performances and art exhibitions are highly attended and celebrated by families. Conversations with parents in the school yard before and after school help the community feel whole, and I especially love watching families walk home together and older kids saying Hi to younger with kindness and respect. HA Brown is a hidden gem in our neighborhood that we dare not keep for ourselves. I hope that this review entices others to inquire about the goodness that goes at HA Brown Elementary.

There are some excellent teachers in the school as well as nice parents. I liked the school better before we added 5th through 7th grades, and adding an 8th grade next year.
