Burckhalter is a hidden gem in Eastmont Hills and we are glad we didn’t overlook it. The principal is approachable and cares deeply about the students and staff. Our child’s teacher communicates with us weekly via email and has high academic standards for the year. The staff are so warm and welcoming and it’s the type of small environment where the teachers know all the kids by name. We were weary of some of the larger elementary schools in Oakland that had “higher scores” and very little diversity. The focus on student academics but also social-emotional learning is really at the forefront here. We also really love the afterschool program that is run by Girls Inc. and the Saturday skateboarding program by Rob Skates. We are new to the school and just getting plugged into the PTO-which seems fairly active despite it being a small school. If you are in the neighborhood or nearby, take time to visit and speak to current families. You may discover one of the best school communities in OUSD!

We moved to Oakland 3 years ago and this is the 3rd my daughter has been placed at due to bullying at the last 2 schools she was at. I did a little research and was told this school might be a better fit for my daughter and it was. Her teacher is great and her principal is excellent. They have a zero and I mean a zero tolerance for bullying. My daughter had one issue and it was nipped in the bud quickly by staff, including the principal. She’s very hands on and knows what’s going on at all times. My daughter is very happy to go to school every day and comes home happy. She has friends and she’s actually learning, unlike at the other OUSD schools I placed her in. I’m very pleased with this school.

I am a teacher at this gem of a school nestled atop Edwards Avenue. I love my job, I love my Principal and I love our children! This is a small school where we know the names of all our children. They are loved and valued and given the academic rigor they are entitled to. We work hard , have a great academic program and our After-School Program from Ujima Foundation is the icing on the cake. We are developing a strong writing program at our school. Science, technology and mathematics are highly valued and taught with rigor, and we focus on developing strong leadership skills and confidence in our children. Drop by, come in and look around.
