By far, Philip’s Academy Charter School is second to none in all areas. There are no other schools in the Newark area like it. My 2 kids go here and this is why:Academically, my daughters are being challenged daily. And, they are held accountable for their learning. They are not just given paper copies and asked to memorize information. They learn through projects, collaboration with other students, and are made into true leaders. Along with general education courses, they also get to STEM, Music, Drama, Spanish or French, Gym, Art, Broadcasting and Journalism, and so much more! There is the Rooftop Garden where the kids are involved in planting fruits and vegetables. Then they get to eat their own produce through deliciously-prepared meals during lunch. There is the Multicultural Performance where each grade gets to research and learn about a different country and then perform. Black History Month – the school transforms into an exhibit with all the research projects that line the hallways. It’s truly amazing! Pi Contest – my kids are challenged every year to see who can recite the most Pi numbers! One student recited 605 digits and won a prize! There’s the monthly student broadcasting and journalism, student government, Family Math Night, Men Can Cook Festival, PTA, extracurricular activities and the list goes on. Each classroom has technology like Smartboards, computers and iPads, and the school is so beautiful inside. My kids have gone here since PreK and will graduate soon. It’s like family here. I’ll truly miss this school when they have to leave.

I'm actually quite surprised that Philips Academy only ranked in at 6! This school is nothing short of amazing! I guess in terms of tests scores they may be outdone by North Star, who is very rigid as per some of my associates, who's children attend the school; but I'm really happy to know that my daughter ended up in such a multi-cultural and eco-friendly school. She's taken such an interest in Science, which she did not like prior, but aspires to be a Scientist. They really know how to bring out the hunger for learning in a child and recognize the different levels the children are on academically and split them into groups without them knowing why they're being grouped. The teachers really care about their students and can identify when something is wrong and will work with the child to ensure they feel safe enough to speak and important enough to be heard. They also promote team work where the peers help each other with their learning and encourage them socially. I have nothing bad to say about this school, I'm just grateful to have my child as student here.

Excellent! I absolutely love the environment. Academics and food are of the highest quality. My son is blossoming academically and socially, he is placed in enrichment groups to challenge him more. We are now in a dilemma while we want to move out of Essex County due to high property taxes we don't want to move our son from this school. It's worth the sacrifice. You have to be involved if you want to get everything out of this wonderful opportunity. Any negative reviews are those who chose not to adjust or be involved in the school community.

This is the best school I have EVER attended. I came here in the Upper School and am now an eighth grader. When I first came to SPA, it was a social and academic adjustment. I had trouble making friends. However, I have grown so much. I have many friends now. I have become more outgoing due to the great community here at SPA. We have an advisory group where we talk and play games. We do community service with the younger kids, and all of the grades hang out. At my old school, I was ignored by my teachers. Here, the small enviroment has allowed me to find my academic potential. The teachers are always willing to stay for extra time, especially Mrs. Ito and Mr. Eichmann. The Chromebooks given to us eighth graders have been an extreme help. I am able to hand in work on time and collaborate with my peers. The lunch may not be that great, but I d rather go to a school with healthy lunch, great academics, advanced technology, and a great community than my old school, where the lunch was awesome, but there were various cliques and unhelpful teachers. Signed, a current student sad to leave SPA.
