Generally, I would say this is a typical academic environment. There are stellar educators and there are unimpressive educators that are still sorting out their own niche as teachers, parent partners and guidance to the students. There is excellent administration and then there is administration that are just doing their jobs. There are great families and then there are families that are predominately focused on ensuring that their child(ren) are able to take advantage of the school as a “stepping stone” into boarding school or an elite school (a noticeably shared priority and aspiration among the parent body). The school does academically challenge students from what I have observed (lower school), but what I have also come to learn is that academic rigor is not the totality of a great school experience.

Harlem is a great school for children that need a lot of structure. It gives many children exposure to an education that goes beyond the classroom. Many of the teachers have a true desire for their students to succeed.

Harlem Academy has created an environment of not only academic growth but personal growth for our daughter. The teachers, staff and administration ensures that families are nurtured and enriched in a way that you don't find at most schools. Everyone knows everyone's name and that encourages you to get to know others outside of your classroom and grade level as well creating an extended support system for the whole family. We appreciate the individual attention to students receive to challenge in areas of strength and weakness and as a result you will see your child grow into a well read, articulate human being who stands to teach others adults and children alike core values that so many forget.

His teachers go out of their way to make learning a fun experience. They also make a genuine effort to help with his progress and development. I highly recommend this school.

Our son has been attending Harlem Academy since 1st grade and is currently in 7th grade. He continues to look forward to going to school everyday. The staff and teachers at Harlem Academy are caring and cultivating. The school offers electives all of which our son enjoys participating in such as Chess, Pottery Class, Soccer, Running, just to name a few. We are confident that this school has set a solid foundation for his learning path. Harlem Academy has taught him to be an independent thinker and learner. We are assertive we made the BEST choice for our son at Harlem Academy. We HIGHLY recommend Harlem Academy.

Harlem Academy is truly a hidden gem. This is my son’s second year at this school. I chose Harlem Academy because I truly believed in their mission to provide an educational environment that provides opportunities for all students. My son has blossomed into a thoughtful, well-spoken, critical and independent thinker. During my time at Harlem Academy, I noticed that the upper school students are unique, well-grounded, and driven individuals. This school caters to each individual student’s learning styles, interests, and personality. Their mission is about developing the whole child; therefore, techniques are in placed to support them. I am so thankful to his teachers and support staff with supporting my son’s development and making learning encounters more relevant and effective for him. I have no doubt that he will be well prepared for high school!

As a 10th grader currently on the honor roll going on to 11th in the fall next year, I can confidently say that no student will ever come out of Harlem Academy a failure. Before becoming a student at HA, I did not know what it was like to be in a community where people were actually committed to my education100%. To be honest, Mr. Dotoli, the school principal, changed the course of my life more than I can say with the less than seven hundred and fifty characters I have left to type this review. It was through Mr. Dotoli, and his highly dedicated staff, that I made the connections that I have now. I am a successful student (If I do say so myself), and every time someone asks me how I got to be where I am with my dedication to my school life and future, I tell them that Harlem Academy swooped in on my life, gave me a desk and a pencil, and proceeded to teach me how to write for myself a life that is filled with so much more possibility than I ever thought possible. I love that school, and parents only do their children injustice by not sending them there.

The vast majority of children who live in Harlem don't get the education that they deserve. Harlem Academy is trying to offer that opportunity by establishing a school that challenges, guides, and supports them to their full academic potential and sets the foundation for long-term academic and life success. Harlem Academy works to accomplish this by partnering with their students' families to prepare each of them to enter and thrive at a top secondary school. Harlem Academy's curriculum includes more than five hours of academic instruction each day in addition to visual and performing arts, athletics, independent reading, and extensive opportunities to explore the cultural resources of New York. Students are admitted to the school based on criteria of family partnership, engagement in the learning process, and academic potential. Every enrolling family signs a contract stating their financial and personal investment in their child's education, and no student is ever turned away for financial reasons.
