There are teachers that get away with not teaching. The principal is a bully himself so its no wonder that he allows it to go on with the students. In-effective administration.

We moved here from NJ in June 2017. The school was helpful guiding my incoming freshman daughter select her classes and get registered for the upcoming school year. She decided upon honors classes and I have been extremely happy with the teachers. Anytime I had an question or concern, I emailed the teacher and received a very prompt response. My daughter was given information on classroom policies, ethics and expectations which we both signed. The guidance counselors contact parents regularly with updates via email and schedule meetings with parents and students to help determine classes for upcoming semesters. We are given the opportunity to review our child's grades online as well as being sent emails with progress updates. My daughter elected to be part of SHS Performing Arts production of Beauty and the Beast and is already making friends with cast and crew - all hard working dedicated individuals willing to work hard to make the show a success. There is a dress code. (One of the older reviews was concerned about appropriate clothing. I'm not sure if this is new, but the dress code is strictly enforced and students dressed appropriated.). Although it is a bit of an adjustment moving from the north to the south, my daughter is thriving at SHS. I'm not sure how they come up with the rankings, but I would go much higher than the current rating of 6. I cannot comment on each category (disabilities, bullying) but our experience at SHS has been wonderful. We had a good feeling about the school when we came down and took a tour. The only negative comment I would make is the over-crowding and sometime late arrival of the morning bus. As such, we've decided to drive our daughter to school in the mornings. As for the school itself, everything has been great so far.

This school doesn't care about anyone who doesn't make the grade. The teachers never reached out to me in any way to offer more help or show concern for my child knowing that he was an honors student and now he is failing.In fact, that was the only contact i received from a teacher on the second to last day of school that he has failed the course for the year.

I'm a concerned graduate of Socastee High School. While at Socastee there was a bomb threat, there was a suicide, there were multiple drop outs. There were issues with substance abuse and there were no efforts to stop bullying or substance abuse. Most schools have some form of promotion or intervention in regards to bullying. I think this lack of interest is very much so related to the problems Socastee had. I also think that Socastee is missing some very important staff. There is no school social worker nor is there a school psychologist. These could also be determining factors for the negative rates in regards to the students. I think these are all things that should be considered. The college prep classes are in no way college prep. Students do not get what they need to go to college from them. These are the students who leave with an 8th grade reading level. A lot needs to be done to get Socastee on the right track.

I am a parent of 2 children that have grown up in the forestbrook/Socastee HS system. My daughter is in her 2nd year at Clemson and my son is a junior at Socastee. The teachers, staff & academics are as superior as you can ever possibly expect! I, personally grew up moving all over the country. I've been fortunate to have my family living in Myrtle Beach for the past 10+ years and their education is top priority to me. I have NOT been disappointed in the least! To comment on the post in regards to having their 10 yr Olds at a football game and the behavior of what they witnessed - those kids may not even go to Socastee and the kids that represent the school in good way were out on the football field playing ball or in the marching band or volunteering at the concession stands. Don't judge the school on what you witnessed being there for about an hour. You also will be in for a rude awakening with the difference in attitude having a 10 year old vs a teenager ~ a 5th grader vs a 9th or 10th is huge as they are going through changes in hormones and more. Bottom line: Socastee High School is a PHENOMENAL school for teens & parents that want a fantastic education!

I attended a football game at Socastee High School with my son and one of his friends (both 10 years old). I was so disappointed in how the students represented their school. Many young ladies were clothed so immodestly, and both the young men and women were cursing and using vulgarity like it's a normal, everyday occurrence (which it should not be, especially at 14-15 years of age). I also witnessed a fight between some of the students being broken up, only for one of the young men to be escorted away by a police officer. I'm hoping this wasn't an accurate representation of the entire school, but it's sad that these students think so little of their school and classmates to dress and act this way. My son and his friend were so uncomfortable that we left at half-time. I was considering sending my son to this high school when the time comes but I'm seriously rethinking that.

I moved to Myrtle Beach when my son was just under 2 years old from New York City, researched the schools all along the Grand Strand - Myrtle Beach, and found Socastee had the highest national academic rating of all the schools in the area. Top 5% of public high schools as rated by Newsweek for 3 consecutive years. Academically challenging, SHS has both an International Bacceluarate Program and an Honors/AP tract. They do not allow your kids to eat junk food during lunch or even buy soda - YES! My choice to build my home in this area was based upon my son's education, and it has been the right choice. He participated in the honors program at Socastee High School, Lacrosse, enjoyed extra carricular activites, and is now an honors student in college. This school is far ahead of most. The Principal is as involved with the students as if they were his own children. He can be seen at any SHS eventm and is avalable to meet with parents. The rest of the staff & teachers are MOST EXCELLENT. I cannot say enough about the wonderful and dedicated educators. I appreciate everything they have done to educate my son, and give him the tools he needs for college as well as life. ILSHS!
