The school consistently puts students in danger during severe weather. Most of the time, they require us to attend, even when other schools in Mississippi allow their students and teachers to stay home. Additionally, they are negligent when it comes to remembering important matters—speaking from personal experience. They also fail to prioritize safety when children are sick. If a student's parents can't pick them up, the school forces them to stay awake and complete work instead of isolating them to prevent the spread of illness. When a large number of students contracted the stomach virus and flu, they didn’t require masks, which could have helped reduce the spread. They also could have closed the school for a week to minimize exposure, but instead, they allowed the situation to worsenThe school receives funding from the major shipyard, Ingalls, as well as from parents' taxes, yet they fail to address serious issues like mold in the vents—something students breathe in daily—or the visible mold on the ceilings. This poses a health risk to teachers, staff, and, most importantly, the students—our future. I truly believe the school could do much better, but it seems like they only take action when there's a risk of the public finding out about the conditions inside."

I AM A teacher at Magnolia Juior high. I must tell you that teacher are resigning mid year due to lack of a stong administration at this school. The leadership is chaotic at best, information is never shared until situations are about to happen. There is lack of preparation and direction among the leadership. I have taught over 25 years and find the situation unacceptable. I love teaching but I need support.

I am a teacher at Magnolia Jr. High School in Moss Point, Mississippi. I have loved teaching here since I started quite a few years ago. We have been given the task of taking elementary students and turning them into High School Students. We work with them academically and emotionally to mature them into well adjusted young people. All the typical school problems are there from personal discipline to lack of effort, from supportive parents to absentee parents, from those who know every grade their child makes to those who cry foul after their child has failed. Magnolia and the Moss Point School District have great policies such as: every teacher contacting the parent of each child at least once every quarter; posting lesson plans and classwork on Haiku for students and parents to use; open classrooms for parents to attend any time they wish; progress reports sent out twice per quarter; the MTM teaching model; and the list goes on. If I were to have a wish it would be that the community would open itself up to new ideas and drop old attitudes, to realize that teachers are not the bad guys, but the people preparing young minds for a brave new world.

Ask me, "Is teaching a good job?" I would say , "No, but it has a great schedule." Ask me, "Do you like teaching?" I would say, "I love teaching. I love working with children and taking part in their learning process. I work daily with wonderful peers. However, the school systems definitely need reforming." I am a former teacher of Magnolia Jr. High School. The students at MJHS are really no different than the students at any other school. Children will always be children. Most of the teachers are just as educated, if not more, as any teacher at any other school. There was a lack of professionalism and adherence to district guidelines. Teachers are disrespected by administration and the student pick up on this and continue the behavior. The same behavior they have learned from watching the person who is supposed to be "in charge". Those children, just like any other, will only do as much as they are allowed to do and get away with. The problem is they get away with a lot in MP. Until that changes, classroom management, student behavior, regular grades and test grades will continue to remain low. MP needs devine intervention. Pray for those children to receive the tools they need.
