I went here for all four years. It is a fairly solid school despite the financial challenges many of the students face.

It is a fine place to learn about the types of people in the world and how to work the system. Hopefully in the future I can see the campus become more beautiful like it used to look like with the towering spanish gothic spires and mystical murals, but the first thing that needs to change is the discipline effectiveness, and I am determined to improve both those things. Sayonara!

horrible and i cannot wait til she's out of there. She's in the MAOS program so the classes are decent. But that's it. The school is run down and disgusting but they just sunk a bunch of money into the football field and are giving kids chromebooks. I'd rather see the school improve overall then dole out chromebooks.

I graduated from Monterey High School in 2012, and in one year I will receive my Bachelor's from Humboldt State University. Mrs. Eagle, my AP English teacher, prepared me for college more than any other person in my life, and for her I am thankful. Many of my classmates today went to private high schools, and showed up to HSU much less prepared than me. Though Monterey High is far from perfect, it can be a great opportunity for growth, if only students would apply themselves and not expect all learning to happen in the classroom.

Don't get me started about the fights and drugs. My son previously attended San Carlos from 1st-8th grade. During mid-second semester of 8th Grade year , most of his friends were applying for the MAOS program, a program to study oceanographic science. The MAOS program (As we thought) would be considered a private school in a public school type setting BUT.. we were fooled. He got accepted in the MAOS program and on his first day of school he was offered drugs... AS A FRESHMAN! Many people don't realize that the administration is poor too, he got bullied for his small size and scolded for his high voice. This school is polluted with rude, unconscientious people. I highly don't recommend Monterey High School for your kids. Although, my son was small, your kid may not be teased as well. It depends on who you are.

Don't listen to the people complaining of mediocrity. Monterey High can be an excellent school if the student reaches out and puts effort into their high school experience. Sure, MHS is lacking in some aspects and I have had a few teachers I would not width to have again, but no school is perfect and it is up to the student to find opportunities like academies (MAOS, ACA, SPARK), AP classes (many are offered!), and clubs. Remember that in a public school your child will have new experiences, find opportunities, and become friends with many different types of people. Please think twice before choosing a private school...Go Dores!

Honestly, for a public school it's pretty decent. Overall, it isn't a school where I wanted my child to go to. Teachers have a lack of personal communication. Which is what I really look for in a school. Communication is key to helping the student understand what the teacher is teaching, and I think Monterey High just doesn't do that. Luckily my child survived, but if I would have turn back time, I would have put her in another school.

Wonderful high school!!! Great teachers, great campus with a rich history. There are many programs and challenging classes for students. Administration cares about college prep and helping students succeed. The best high school in the district by far!! Amazing academics and athletics and extra-curricular activities to keep the teenagers busy.

My younger son is a Sophmore at Monterey High and let me begin by saying that this school leaves much to be desired! The teachers we have encountered have put forth ZERO EFFORT in regards to school - home communication. The return rate of response on emails is about a 2% at best. When we called the SORRY counseling office, which most times rings off the hook, we were told that all outside emails go to the junk mail. Are you kidding me?? How do they expect to keep in touch with parents...the answer: they don't. The counseling office is just as disappointing where your concern as a parent is tossed to the side and it's excuse after excuse after excuse. Just this week we recieved our son's progress report and it wasn't what we had hoped. Considering none of his teachers had replied to the MANY emails we have sent, we called the counseling department where we were told that we could make an appointment for an after school meeting, but if it's on a Friday they won't show up. WHAT?? It's disheartening to see such a lack of concern on the part of the school staff when you think that they truely are molding the citizens of our future.
