I’m very happy with my students education at Sheridan. It often feels like I’m getting the charter school experience at a public school.

I highly recommend the Spanish immersion program. My daughter started attending as a High Five student in the Spanish section. She had an excellent teacher from Spain with lots of experience who made learning fun. We decided to continue at Sheridan in the Spanish kindergarten. She's been one of 13 kids in her classroom. Her teacher is Colombian. I have been genuinely surprised by how much she is able to read. They teach the kids to learn to read in Spanish which is very phonetic. The result is that she can read children's books in Spanish. The reading skill transfers to English too. She says it is hard reading English but she is able to sound her way through reading Peter Rabbit with a little help. The school has a Music, Language and Culture class that brings together Latino culture with music. She comes home singing what she learned. The students put on performances regularly. The arts magnet also offers band, visual art and some other arts curriculum. The school is in one of those classic brick buildings and has a really incredible auditorium with a hardwood stage and big red curtains. The school grounds are getting a makeover this spring and summer. If I hadn't had my daughter first in the High Five, I think the ratings on this site would have made me turn away from a school where my daughter has thrived. It's important to be aware that what these ratings reflect is poverty level. Sheridan is working hard to overcome issues that affect students living in poverty. They have some community partners that help with special programs. The principal is accessible. She is bilingual and committed to helping this program grow.

My son is in the ASD program at Sheridan. The teachers and staff are GREAT. I have been very impressed with how much attention each student receives. The music & theater classes are impressive, great place if your kiddo is into that. On the downside, being in one of the lowest income zones in Minneapolis of course makes things tough for a lot of students. And although there is great opportunity for parent involvement, there doesn't seem to be much.
