School environment does not produce children that are on grade level ! Please do your research on this “school” it is not what it appears to be .

I loved the children and chose to work there with a pay cut from my previous School because I believed in the mission so much but the founder/executive director/principal made it a toxic and unsustainable place to be. There was no conceivable way to stay under that woman’s leadership being that she was responsible for completing our teacher evaluations for our teaching credentials. The schedule and curriculum always changed and you were blamed for everything. Threats, gaslighting is just the half of it. If you want a career in education where you can grow, this is not the place for you. No actual leveled reading curriculum ever bought for the school and it was gravely needed. The 2022 Board went on a paid retreat while we didn’t even have adequate books! The founder (CH )also pits people against each other. There is no real love ethic at this school.

The school environment was very welcoming and the teachers and staff were dedicated to give the students a good experience and feel acknowledged. I went to that school shy and timid and now I'm way more confident. I don't care what anyone else says, but learning by design is a great school.

As a former Co-teacher of LbD I'd like to begin this review by stating I love the mission and goal (to disrupt the structure of traditional education through personalized learning/restorative practices) of the organization but, it is not executed in a professional or supportive manner that allows their staff to grow. Teachers and supporting staff are overworked due to the school's lack of hiring folks based on experience or simply not having enough people to be running a school. There is an extremely high turnover rate for their employees, specifically teachers. Within my short time as being part of the organization, many employees have resigned or were terminated. The leadership team as a whole has room to grow as well, specifically in fostering collaboration, healthy communication, and trust amongst their staff to create a healthy and safe work environment. I believe once these things are consistent and continuously happening their staff will feel like they can take ownership and feel like a team. There is an opportunity for growth in event planning/delegation, communication, fundraising, and cultivating a safe space for their employees to share their concerns. I would like to end this review by stating that I hope the Administration team takes time to look inward and reflect on why so many people have passed through their organization and why many folks do not feel like they have a safe working environment. I would encourage them to take accountability for how they operate and get the support they need. I was extremely excited going into this organization because of its mission and vision - it's unfortunate to see them fall short and not meet the needs of the community.

As a former parent, I can honestly say this school, Learning by Design at 7019 S. Van Ness Ave L.A., CA 90047, has been our worst experience ever. Everytime I've brought up safety, bullying, under and unqualified staff concerns, the School's founder/Director (C.H.) has persuasively apologized and promised things will be change and be better. It's been over a year and a half and things have remained the same or worse. Teachers keep leaving or getting fired because of the lack of professionalism the administration has with it's own staff, students, parents and community. Not having a dedicated, permanent teacher while my kid was there was awful. They'd use non- credentialed student teacher's , sometimes TA's or even the principal to cover my kid's class. The office staff and the lady who does who knows what in the back office (D.G.)say one thing and the Director (C.H) says another... they all talk behind parents backs once you're out of sight... I know this because I've overheard them in two occasions. They're daily curriculum and "after school" program is like nothing I've seen before..They know how to talk the talk but they definitely dont walk the walk. Take your kids elsewhere.

I have recently come across some other reviews where the owner of the school is copying and pasting a response claiming they are all fraud about the terrible toxic work environment of this school. While this is just another anonymous post I had to post elsewhere to say that 100% that is a lie. I won't say much as they are clearly misinformed per usual but the reviews were not from some errant board member. I can say as a former employee that I know for a fact at least one is true because I wrote it and Im not a board member. I also speak to two other former employees who told me they wrote theirs. This narrative of ALL the posts being from a board member creating fake accounts is laughable. After all this time they (C&T) still don't see its them. Its really just sad at this point that as much as they tout wellness self reflection seems to not be included.
