I moved to Lawrence thinking it was one of the best school districts. I was so wrong. I should have stayed my behind back in Brooklyn. To begin, there is no homework assigned to the kids. How are children supposed to progress when there is no foundation of organization and assignments to be turned in? It seems like a free for all as far as education goes. Teachers are more concerned about what their weekend activities will be and what they will be getting for teachers appreciation week rather than teach the kids the basics of education. Most of the day my kid comes home and doesn’t know the current date and month. During Parent/teacher night I asked to show some work the children completed in school, the teacher showed me a random social studies book with empty lines. This goes to show me that the teachers don’t find the time to actually teach. Also, what’s concerning is that children are being tested by the state yet have no actually practice prior to testing. This is extremely concerning to me.

The Lawrence district has decided that they do not teach cursive writing to the elementary school students. A terrible decision in my view. Our children had to be taught independently from this school on how to write their name in cursive and read cursive writing documents. The district has determined they have other priorities such as teaching Spanish language randomly during school sessions and "character" education all of which meaningless check the box exercises to make the administrators and community feel good. Education in this state has sunk to teaching to the lowest common denominator. Sickening.

Sometimes the school is really cheap on things and do really lame stuff but when they do fun things it is pretty fun. Most of the teachers are really nice and fun also the school is very cringy. I like this school. But sometimes I don't.

My child, a 4th grader really enjoyed her first year at LIS. We were apprehensive about the transition, moving from Lawrence Elementary School (LES), a wonderful, small, elementary school to a much larger Intermediate school (made up of four local elementary schools) but we were very pleasantly surprised. Before the start of term all the new kids were invited to a meet and greet, which was a good opportunity for the kids to meet new friends and see some of their teachers and just get a general feel for the school. The 4th grade teachers have been great, my daughter's teacher was extremely supportive and encouraging and really helped to make the classes an enjoyable learning experience. She helped to build on my daughter's strengths and provide extra help and support where needed. There have been some fun events throughout the year with a visit to a local historical house and a day trip to the aquarium with parents participation and music and chorus activities for the kids to join. It’s been a positive experience and we are looking forward to the start of a new school year.

Our first child finished LIS two years ago and had a fantastic experience. Really superior. Our second child just finished 4th grade and we could not be happier. They both look forward to school and are interested and challenged. We feel particularly lucky when we hear the horror stories from other districts that are supposed to be "blue ribbon".

I can only descirbe this year as one thing. Stressful. My teacher kept me constantly on my toes not to slip up, and most kids can't really do that. 180 days of this! Now before I go on a rant, let's talk about their bullying program. It doesn't work. I know atleast 5 bullies at this school who have bullied me at least once. Another thing is that the higher-ups don't really know what to do with the extra time, so instead of putting it in at different times, We have around 10 days with no work. Those are just the major pointers about the bad. But here is the good. Most of the teachers are good, and I like most of them. That's it. The End.

This school is adequate. Some teachers are good. Many are mediocre to bad. They have a reasonable approach to homework levels. But my biggest complaint is this school's unspoken philosophy is "Sink or Swim, Kids!" If your child needs emotional support, they won't find it from the teachers and staff. The kids are left to fend for themselves. A child who isn't good at expressing themselves when under stress will be dismissed. These kids are still elementary school-aged. The staff expects them to have the maturity and experience of a high schooler.

LIS has a challenging curriculum and is filled with experienced and knowledgable teachers.Also worth noting is the Lawrence Township Education Foundation (LTEF) which supports the growth of our students at LIS through innovative programs touching on science , technology and the arts. Their is great communication amongst the teachers and administrative staff. We have found them to be supportive .Their is also a large variety of extra curricular activities including clubs and sports.We find that the well mannered multicultural student body makes for a nice learning environment for our children. I have had two kids graduate from LMS. The staff is caring and passionate. Kids are treated as individuals and there is a focus not just on academics, but also on character building. As a result student learn both the skills that will help them succeed academically and succeed as members of the community. Great communication to parents and a warm and welcoming atmosphere.

Lawrence Intermediate School is a gem in the district. I have one child who graduated from the Intermediate School with an excellent education, with an emphasis on writing and mathematics. I have another child going through the school now and having the same successful experience. The teachers are engaged, challenging and motivating. They are always willing to help students. There are many opportunities for students to get involved in their school. The principal cares deeply for her students, staff and school and is always available to address a question or need.

My kids have had wonderful experiences at this school. Teachers go above and beyond to help their students. There are so many ways for kids to get involved with activities including student council, school show, music (chorus, band, orchestra), before and after school clubs and more. The school has some wonderful things including an outdoor classroom space, 3D printer, summer reading programs for all students, yoga, and more. The highlight for both of my kids was the 4th grade field trip around the historic town where we live. They learned so much about the history and highlights.

LIS has top notch teachers and I love the administration. I just viewed a top prep school in the area and the teacher speaking was working on his masters. I have two children in LTPS, both teachers have their masters and both are master teachers! As for the comment below about a child being placed in a special ed class: The classes have a much lower teacher to student ratio. She should be happy the child is getting personal attention (and will be happy and realize it later)

LIS has a good team of administrators and better teachers. The large class sizes are well handled by the faculty and staff and there is a very active PTO. The local education foundation has supplemented funding shortfalls. Despite its size, there is a definite personal attention to every student that belies the fact that it is a public school in a private school dominated area.

As a parent of an incoming fourth grader (from Ben Franklin), I was concerned about the transition process, as well as my son's overall experience. The transition was a non-issue, he loves his teacher, I've already received personal feedback from one of his other teachers, and if the attendance at the first PTO meeting is any indication, the parent involvement will be strong! Looking forward to three great years at LIS!
