Good school to be at for youth

I thought this school had evolved greatly over time. The former principal was more sympathetic and empathetic toward parents since I am a parent. Bullying is rampant, and from what I've heard from other parents, not much is being done about it. I think the guidance counselor at Garfield School has to be more personable and more adept at addressing these kinds of situations. I have heard nothing but positive things about Washington School's guidance counselor; she never gives up and never fails to make an impact. With any luck, hopefully Garfield will make a difference for our children.

Academic program leaves a lot to be desired. Some children fall behind, while others in the same class are bored with the repetition. Besides that, There are teachers who gave up a long time ago and should really quit for the sake of the kids. Being a bully is seriously frowned upon. The same rules don’t apply to teachers though. There are a few teachers who do really care and you can tell that they do. But it wasn’t enough to continue staying at the school.

Very poor performance overall. The atmosphere is ok and teachers are friendly. Just not a rigorous enough academic program for stronger kids, my daughter fell back after three months in the school and her friends from her previous school were way ahead. I had to change her school ASAP to a school in another town.

Public Schools in Kearny area 20 years ago was great, with wonderful well educated loving teachers, now Garfield School is under the tirany of new teachers without vocation, only working for benefits, and Vacations,no patience, no love for the kids or any kind of compassion. It is sad that the only option that people have is taking their attitude or sacrifice a lot to send kids to private schools. They do have loving teachers there but they are from the old school. The rest of the parents have to accept the 60% of young teachers without experience..it is SAD....

I like the teachers my children have had so far, they are very dedicated to the children. The principal is also nice and very respectful. I just think that the parents should be more on top of their kids, some kids push other kids around but it is controlled by the teachers in school but it is the parents responsibility for their behavior.
