Choosing FLA for my daughter has been one of the best decisions we've made. The teachers are passionate, intentional, invested in the children's learning, and create a nurturing, engaging environment where students truly thrive. From the moment we were offered a spot, I have experienced nothing but support, transparency, and great communication from leadership, the staff, and everyone we've encountered. My daughter loves going to school and it's evident how much she is learning and growing every day. There is a strong sense of community and parent involvement is highly encouraged (there are many opportunities to be part of things and be involved in the children's learning experience!) There are frequent events which make everyone feel welcome and overall, the environment at FLA is positive and warm. I honestly couldn’t ask for more. If you're considering FLA, I wholeheartedly encourage you to take a closer look. it’s truly a hidden gem in KCMO and we're so happy to be part of this amazing community.

I echo many of the positive sentiments already shared about the Mandarin program—it’s an exceptional part of an incredible school! My son has been in the program for three years, and it’s been amazing to watch him grow in confidence and fluency in one of the world’s most challenging languages. One of the standout aspects of the program is that the teachers are native speakers, which was very important to us in choosing an immersion program. Their expertise and cultural knowledge create a truly authentic and enriching learning environment. The program itself is smaller, fostering a close-knit and supportive community, but students also get the chance to connect with peers in the Spanish program, especially during LINC. Speaking of LINC, the free early and late care offered through this program has been an absolute lifesaver for our family. Having safe, reliable care starting as early as 7 AM and going until 6 PM is an incredible resource that makes this school accessible for so many families. Add to that the fact that it's completely free—it’s hard to imagine a better opportunity right here in KCPS. Highly recommend!

My children attend FLA in the Mandarin Immersion Program. We are excited that a FREE, public school exists in Kansas City that is able to immerse them in a new language and culture. There are many opportunities for parents to be involved. Learning such a challenging language at a young age has benefits to their brain development and will open up doors down the line as they become more proficient speakers, listeners, readers and writers of both English and Chinese. Additionally, the native-speaking teachers are attentive and organized, always creating a welcoming space for their students. If you are wondering if you should pick Spanish or Mandarin, we would welcome you to the Mandarin program to connect with a smaller group of families in a tight-knit community. Having smaller class sizes means more attention and opportunity for your learner to grow and for both you and your child to develop strong relationships in these formative years.

I really love this school. My son is a first grader in the Spanish program. You can choose between two language immersion programs, Spanish or Mandarin. The school has a very supportive administration the principal Mrs. Hill is great. The school also has very active PTO they organize great activities for families to get involved. The school also organizes wonderful events like Lunar New Year celebrations and Hispanic Heritage celebrations. I’m looking forward to more years to come at this school.

I love the Chinese Immersion program at FLA for my two daughters. Both their teachers are native speakers, and the program is full immersion until 2nd grade. I am happy my daughters are continuously passing the Youth Chinese Test (YCT), an international standardized test of Chinese language proficiency. Every year, the school has great cultural events celebrating Lunar New Year, Hispanic Heritage Month, and World Culture Night. I love that there are clubs for students in grades K-8. In kindergarten and first grade, my girls participated in the Sign Language Club and Girl Scouts. Ms. Hill, the principal, is very friendly and disciplines restoratively rather than punitive. The major improvements I'd like to see at FLA are improvements in school lunch and building spaces.

My son's IEP meeting was very unprofessional They wanted him to get into a all English school which I understood very well....But,did not like the staffs attitude towards the situation. Now my son is in a better school where they actually want to help him achieve his minor issues and I feel my son is better respected there as a child that needs a little more help with certain subjects.

My daughter has attended this school since kindergarten. Not only is she excelling in her foreign language mastery, she is excelling at English reading/writing as well. This can solely be contributed to not only an amazing teaching staff, but a great principal as well. The faculty evidently cares about the success of your student. She has always had homework since the start of kindergarten and now. We have had a great rapport with all of her teachers and received prompt response from not only teachers but the principal as well whenever we have had a concern. I would recommend this school for anyone and constantly sing its praises!

As a former student of this school. I highly recommend parents take their children to this school. The education is excellent and the subjects the teachers teach are excellent. Yes some of the teachers are a little strict due to the country they are from. But when your child gets older the strictness is worth it. Even some of the teachers will teach your children advance subjects but trust in the future it worth it. It teach your child different language of course. But at the same time it teach your student to be more open minded to other people cultures and customs. If I ever had a child from K-8th this would been the only school in the Kansas City School District where I would send my child.

My daughter attends kindergarten at foreign language academy. We are a white, middle class family of four living in waldo and are absolutely in love with FLA. My daughter is in a lively, loving class of kids. Her teacher is warm and has taught at FLA for 15 years. She is a master teacher. She believes that children need to play and enjoy learning. She also conducts all of the classes in spanish. My daughter is coming home and speaking spanish to me!! She is also in the accelerated reading program. Foreign Language Academy is now the only accredited schools in Kansas city. I believe it is safe and loving and the principal Dr. Allman is one of the best in the country. The staff is on the ball and always working to keep things fun and safe. They speak with respect to the children and are always present. I am a musician so the arts and muisic are important to me. This school offers a very good music program which cannot be found at Academie Lafayette and other private schools. Because this is a public school, as oppossed to a charter school, we feel a part of this city and feel that our presence in this school is crucial for positive change in Kansas CIty.

This school has greatly failed our kids, my daughter was in 6th grade at that school. They gave her substandard work ( 4th grade work) and no home assignment. She brought home more home work when she was in 5th grade. You complain to the principal and teachers and nobody cares .The school did not make AYP and have not been making AYP. The principal and some of the staff need to be replace, they are just there for a salary to pay their bills. Their is a great divide at that school. Shame, Shame, Shame. What a waste of time.

My nephew is going to this school and in these times, I think it is very important that our kids learn a second language. I think it's easer for people to lean a new language the younger they are.

I am the mother of a three-year-old preschool student. He is absolutely thriving at this school. It is a real pick-me-up when I come into the school and everyone is welcoming and knows who I am (as Mesan's Mom) I not only get hugs from my little guy, but from about 5 or 6 other pre-k students as well. He not only loves school, but absolutely loves the LINC staff and activities that he is involved in. I am really looking forward to my son becoming bilingual.
