This is our neighborhood school and have had a several of my children there for years now. In 2020/2021 school year a new principal (Mr. Garcia) came who has been incredibly involved, motivating, and inclusive. Not many schools where the principal knows all the students by name and greets them. Great leadership and aloha. There is a new vice principal in his second year who is very caring and approachable. When my student has had issues, both have been dedicated to listening and solving. The office staff is also very friendly, and knows the kids by name. This is a true neighborhood school that cares and does a lot of events for the the kids. Getting used to new teachers every year is a challenge, but having been here some time now, there is a sense that there’s alot of support behind the scenes with the staff and they seem happy to be there, enjoy their work, and the kids. Staff seem genuinely happy and there’s alot of programs expanding like the gardening classes which add outdoor time. I notice even the custodians and cafeteria workers do an excellent job and are which is so vital to keeping a backbone to the school. The kids are pretty friendly and we are happy with the school.

My daughter is in the second grade. Her teachers have been great! Two of her 3 teachers so far have each had over 30 years of teaching experience. All 3 of her teachers have helped to instill an excitement about learning. She has learned so much.We have recognized that my daughter has a strong school support system—the principal, the teachers (including rotation instructors, lokahi program instructors, Girl Scout troop leaders, A+ program teachers), the kind and helpful ladies in the front office, the cafeteria/lunchroom attendants, the health room nurse, etc. They have all educated and nurtured her in her first few years at Heeia. Furthermore, I have also noticed they all seem to know her well and address her by name. Heeia truly gives us a feeling as though they are a family— a school family. In the couple of years my daughter has been at Heeia, I have recognized how much pride the staff and students have for their school. My husband and I have attended a number of SuperHawk assemblies, Taste of Heeia, May Day, the Daddy and Daughter dance, breakfast with Santa, dinner with Santa, and A+ Bingo Night. She has not been the recipient of bullying, nor does she bully anyone. She has made many great friends, and her friends have great parents.I have just registered my son for Kindergarten at Heeia. My daughter has had a wonderful experience so far. I’m pretty confident my son will have a great experience too.

Some of the staff were great and most of the teachers care about the students but the principal doesn’t actually solve any issues and is a master at talking in circles. The bullies rule the school and get away with it because they put on a good act in front of the adults. Majority of the kids are afraid to say anything for fear of the bullies getting even worse than they already are. If you are not native Hawaiian- don’t come here.

My daughter loves to go to school. The teachers are passionate and make learning a joy for her. KUDOS to Heeia for focusing on the whole child and bringing back music and art.

We are so blessed to be Heeia Hawks! We are military and living in HI for 16 months while my husband gets his masters. We rented in Heeia's district and I am VERY glad! With each event we attend at Heeia, we are more and more impressed! My bachelors is in education and I was really impressed with the first grade team. They helped my daughter transition from German, Montessori kindergarten into American first grade. They were patient and encouraging. She went from the lowest to the highest reading group halfway through the year! This school has also made AYP for 3 years in a row! That is HUGE, especially in HI. Heeia is the first school in the entire state to have Promethean boards in every classroom (essentially a huge iPad on the wall to interact with students using multimedia). I've learned about Ohana through Heeia. PTA does an excellent job of sponsoring family events without over-burdening parents, yet still including us. My only complaint was too many fundraisers (about 10 last year) and they are re-focusing this year. The goal is less fundraisers, but taking them further. GREAT idea!!! They listened to parent feedback. Excellent school, academically, socially, etc!
