Absolutely outstanding school--from leadership/administration to teachers to support staff. Its recent award as a National Blue Ribbon school is proof that this is truly a gem. We are so fortunate to have such an amazing resource for our students! Thanks so much for all you do, its an honor to send my kids to this school.

Houghton Elementary is positive and caring. It has up-to-date-technology, excellent teachers, strong administration, and great communication.

Nearly all of the teachers with whom we've interacted here are caring and compassionate; though, each has their own teaching stye which may or may not suit your child's learning style. We have been fortunate to have good to great teachers in our three years here, but I know of a few horror stories from other parents. The school does the best they can with what they've got. That is, there is a great focus on reading and comprehension, a fair focus on math and extracurriculars, but lacks money for any "bells and whistles." There is no G & T program here and the school lacks funds for field trips or to bring in interesting visitors or programs, which is a shame, considering they are in a solid university town. Parental involvement is moderate--the PTO is sluggish and under-funded. I have heard complaints from parents of special needs kids, as well. So, take that all for what it's worth. I believe they are the best of all options in the area, but would have trouble lining up against the better public schools in Marquette and down-state. We will be moving shortly and I'm concerned about our kids' math capability in a new school as it seems the math focus here is fairly weak.

My sons have attended this school and while it does a good job, I feel that the special education department has gone through too many changes over the past four years. It is impossible to build any consistency with the high turnover of faculty and staff. Also, I volunteer in the resource room and many teachers do not read the children's IEP and rely on the always fluctuating special ed. staff to "help" them understand their students. If you have a neuro-typical child, I am sure they will do well here, but if you have a child that needs special services, then I'd go elsewhere.

Both of our daughters attended there and we thought it was a great place. Friendly, cooperative teachers, encouraged parent involvement, lots of opportunity for additional programs and learning.

Both our daughters went to Houghton Schools from Kindergarten through graduation. The Elementary School was outstanding in terms of academics, personal attention, communication, staff, and the facility/playground. The class sizes were smaller than any of the other local schools. The teachers put in many extra hours putting together after school programs, independent learning centers, and really get to know each student. I volunteered in both the girls' classrooms for 1-3 hours per week and always felt welcome and impressed with the creativity and patience of the staff. We moved to Houghton for the schools and have never regretted it. Our girls have received a fabulous education and lots of extra-curricular opportunies, as well. The music program is the best I've experienced. The proximity of MTU allows for extra tutoring, field trips, and lots of parental support/involvement. I'm proud of our elementary school and recommend it to anyone who asks me! After 17 years in local social work, I haven't heard of a better elementary school in Houghton County.

All 3 of my children went there. Good system and good teachers.
