I have been very happy sending my children to Honoka'a Elementary. I like the small school (about 2 classes per grade) environment. Friendly, welcoming staff and teachers. We have always had very good teachers, and over the years every time we have had some sort of concern it was addressed and resolved. Also really like the the principal. Overall everyone at the school is very kind and caring. I feel my child is safe and well cared for while at school.

It is my experience that parent input and or inquiries quickly agitate the current principal. He pretends to be concerned but is quick to add subtle negative remarks and has never followed up on several issues which he agreed to. Children that are ready for growth and advanced learning have absolutely no resource or opportunity at this School. It seems that more focus is made for children with special needs (and that is not even adequate according to a friend who has a child with those needs). However we have been fortunate to have a few fantastic amazing teachers, but alas without the needed support and resources, they too struggle with many challenges trying to fill the needs of each individual child, average of 30 kids per class, thats a lot to handle. Bullying is a constant in this school and although the school advertises their 0 tolerance for bullying, it still happens, unfortunately not only with the students but staff as well. My child's experience with his fourth grade teacher is interesting to say the least. This teacher focuses on her disciplinary board heavily, my child needed to publicly move his name to first offense for asking to use the restroom. I had the opportunity to meet with her at open house, she is very odd and everything that came out of her mouth was negative and not very reassuring, no eye contact, again huge focus was not at her teaching tasks at hand but rather how her disciplinary board works, and she painted a very dismal outlook for the upcoming year because of changes in teaching and testing . Let me tell you , that meeting left me worried for my child to say the very least.

Honokaa Elementary is much better than, I believe Waimea Elementary, mental math isn't enforced, follow up/communication is very poor, I'd say with nearly all teachers. They have a stronger program, stronger than Middle and their High School, a lot of the Veteran's have retired :( Assuming, your child isn't a struggling learner. I do really like the VP and Principal (better than the previous), Admin is also very sweet. My main complaint is the communication w/ Elementary teachers, my child is a soaring grade level 2nd grader

Got rid of one bad Principal and now this one is getting to be as bad as the other one. Bullying and teasing is a problem. Don't send your gt kid here because they only care about the low kids.
