The school is in major transition and students are in trailers. Students have no opportunities for extracurricular activities, no actual playground or gym, no cafeteria, and didn’t have a nurse for 2 months. I would not recommend this school and the staff does nothing to encourage school spirit or engage parents when problems arise.

The best public school my child has ever attended. Far above and beyond Canr Bay Middle School which she attended one year, I don’t know what all the fuss is about that school. At Hanahan, the teachers have all been caring and maintain good communication with the parents. The band teacher is phenomenal. Sure, the building is much older than Cane Bay’s, but it is well-maintained.

I can’t wait for it to be over. We had a much better experience in our previous district where we felt like family and were welcomed. This school barely acknowledges you when you walk in the door.

High quality education with great and personal teachers. There's probably not a better middle school in the area to have your kids attend.

HMS teachers, parents and students are an integral part of the school's success. As a parent and teacher, I am confident that my child is receiving a quality education.

My school is well-maintained and dedicated to the education of its students! The teachers work hard to be sure that all children are able to rise to their full potential!

Hanahan Middle School is a great school to attend! The hallways are always clean and the staff always has a smile on their face. All the students are well behaved due to great leadership. Hanahan Middle School offers great academics for all students! --Student

As both a parent and a teacher at HMS, I can say that the faculty at this school is dedicated to teaching our children in a safe environment and making sure they get the best education possible. It shows on our PASS scores and by the number of students that achieve local and national awards. Beyond the excellent job teachers do in the classroom, there are many clubs and interscholastic sports available to all our students. We have many clubs that discourage bullying and teach the students to be better citizens. Both the Young Gentleman's and the Young Ladies clubs and Rachel's Challenge (a national antibullying program set up by our guidance department) address bullying and how students should be more positive with each other. I wouldn't send my children to any other school.

My daughter recently finished her 3rd year at HMS. I have to say, I have been extremely disappointed in the administration of this school. My daughter experienced severe psychological trauma due to bullying and the guidance counselor was worse than useless. She was completely unresponsive to my repeated calls and emails. Once the problem became so bad that it could not be ignored, her interventions with my daughter actually caused more harm than good. It was clear that this woman had absolutely no idea how to help children. This opinion was actually confirmed by professional counselors when we sought outside help, one of whom even stated that the guidance counselor's actions "was the worst thing she could have done." On the academic front, we had mixed results. My daughter's math grade suffered quite a bit due to the rapid turnover of teachers. I think she had 3 or 4 different math teachers in one year, most of whom were really bad. On the positive side, her AP English teacher was really excellent and was so supportive and encouraging of my daughter's creative writing talent. Unfortunately, this teacher was being retired this year.

WARNING PARENTS do not send your children to this school it is a military institution for middle school age children. They rule their classrooms by fear, threats, and intimidation.

I have two kids at HMS; one in the 7th grade and one in the 8th. I could not possibly be happier. My kids also attended Hanahan Elementary School and I was not sure the middle school would be able to impress me to the extent the elementary school did but it has far surpassed my expecatations and even my wildest hopes. I know my kids are getting a great education and fabulous character development that is really reinforcing the values I teach at home. It is great to know you have support on all levels and that your kids are getting well prepared for life.

After relocating to the Charleston area for my job, we decided to settle in the Hanahan SC area. Having been a private school family, we were concerned about entering public school. This is our 3rd year at HMS. We have been nothing less than pleased with the progress that our son has made academically. Mr Rogers and team are great! They teach the children with passion. I can say that every teacher (5th and 6th) has been such a joy to partner with. HMS is one of few schools in the area that makes 5th a part of middle school. We were skeptical about how successful our son would be amongst middle school kids. The way HMS transitions the 5th graders was flawless. Our son has had no major adjustment issues. I HIGHLY recommend HMS to anyone looking for a public school with private school caliber education. HMS staff and parents are great partners in our kids' success. We are an African American family and I think it is important to point out that the school does not have a high percentage of African American kids but all kids are treated with the same respect and structure. I look forward to my daughter going to HMS in two years. Thanks Mr Rogers and team!!!!

Both of my sons have attended this school and have done very well academically. The school offers many challenges to students and I believe the teachers really care.
