Elementary school is wonderful. Middle school was a nightmare. The science teacher continually told the students they were horrible and she would be ashamed to be there parent. Teachers worry too much about the little stuff and ignore major issues. My son got a detention for touching the door frame when leaving a class. They will give special attention to certain kids and completely ignore others. Only reason my son stayed is it is the only Catholic option in the county. The archdiocese had to come in multiple times this year to handle staff issues.

Academics are excellent. The ratio of teachers to students in the classrooms is awesome. Teachers are qualified in the subjects taught, they are creative and engage the students in the learning process. They have specials in technology, Spanish, music and band. I am not overly religious. My child goes to St. Mary for the academics. The school fosters learning, a love for learning.

Academics at St. Mary is fair/good. Public schools are probably better in math and science. Most of the teachers are nothing special and teachers are at times former/current parents of St. Mary students who the school works with so they can meet the essential requirements to become a teacher there. Of course, not all teachers but a good handful whose only experience is St.Mary. Not all are the best and the brightest of the teaching pool. Principal was a mom turned St. Mary teacher, turned Principal. Lacks Principal skills but a nice lady.Very disappointed with the way that teachers as well as the principal handle bullying. My child was terrorized by a few of the students in his/her class. Went to the principal and teachers expressing concern. Was told that it would be addressed. All St. Mary students were told to be gentle toward each other and show respect as a little side note when Principal had the student body assembled for another topic; however, individual bullies were not spoken to about their behavior and my child suffered as a result. Some of those same students were given the "Good SAM" award recognizing their exemplary behavior multiple times since initial complaint. Many of the teachers are "old Hagerstown" and have known each other since their own school days. As a result, other "old Hagerstown" friends whose children now go to that school and current teachers whose children have gone to or are currently going to St. Mary reap special benefits by getting the best parts in plays, being Good Sam, receiving recognition, etc. Many people have left the school for such reasons. In many cases happy parents/children at the school are because of this dynamic. The HSA at St. Mary is a different story! Wonderful parents working hard to make the school better for all.Hope this helps someone looking for a school for their children.

St. Mary Catholic School is a faith centered, welcoming community that is the ideal place to educate my son. He is not only learning math facts, grammar rules, and reading comprehension, but he is also developing spiritually in his faith. As a graduate of SMCS I would not have chosen any other school, public or private, for him to go to.

I have two children that attend St. Mary Catholic School and they both absolutely love it. I like that they keep me updated with their interim reports. I just feel really good about this school overall.

All of the staff here is to be praised. The teachers and the nurses have really been a help to me and my child in the past year. Not only do I feel my child is safe here because of these people, but I feel that he is receiving the best education possible to prepare him for the future.

Fantastic school! Fantastic principal, teachers and students!!! The best school in Washington County. Transferred from public and best move we ever made. Our child is learning so much more. Strong foundations, real classwork, the way it should be!

This school is the best school in Washington County (for grades k-8). It's an amazing school that teaches you so much. I highly recommend taking a tour and having your child shadow for a day if they're interested. I'm sure they'll love it and learn a lot!! I'm going into high school now but I loved St Mary.
