I got called a slur when I went here and all the girl had to do was have in-school suspension for 2 days. I also got harassed and when I told guidance, they didn't do anything or even talk to the kid. One of my friends got harassed as well, and once again nothing happened to the kids who did it. The school itself is fine, as well as teachers, but I believe that this school could do better in preventing bullying and enforcing actual consequences instead of kids getting a slap on the wrist. Also, the food here is bad. The cheese for super nachos day both looked and tasted like plastic.

My daughter went to 7th grade in Smith Middle School and she did not have a pleasant experience at the school. She is a high achiever and a very hard worker. She was placed in a team where the teachers are uncooperative. We never had an opportunity to meet with the teachers about our child's progress. There has not been a parent teacher conference in a year. At the beginning of the year, my child was adjusting to the 7th grade and only one time did not complete her homework. I sent the teacher an email informing her that my daughter was unable to complete the homework and that she would submit it the next day, which was not welcomed. My daughter was told (in a rude tone) the same day that my daughter needs to contact the teacher directly. This happened a few weeks after the school opened. She has felt un welcomed ever since. I think as a parent, I have every right to contact the teacher. The teacher was unwelcoming and rude. I am truly disappointed in Smith Middle School as Glastonbury Public Schools is a wonderful school system! We love the district until my daughter reached smith middle school.

Racism is alive and well at this school along with cyber bullying. My child was bullied and physically assaulted by another student and because he defended himself was put as the “problem child”. He was left with bruising and scratches all over his arm. The other white counterpart received 1 day off in school suspension as the aggressor in the situation. Meanwhile, my child received 3 days of out of school suspension. They were both physical with each other and used their hands to hit each other but, my black child received the harsher treatment. We have been in this town for approximately 2 months and moved from out of state. My son had NEVER gotten suspended in any other school district. If I would have known this is what my child of color would be going through, I would have never moved here. So unfortunate as it happens all around town . Please reconsider sending your children to this school if you don’t fit the correct boxes.

If your child is not athletic, white, or rich - they will struggle in the social aspect of schol. I was academically gifted and just tried to be myself - so therefore I made some of my closest friends. I will be returning in the fall, but this school is also extremely conservative. Placement and leveling for courses, I've noticed, are extremely bias. Can't complain, though. Just try to pull through for the 2 years, or consider private schools like Renbrook or KO. Which is what I'll be doing when I reach high school.

This school has an excellent academic system. The students' levels are indicated by their performances on tests and quotidian school work. As a mother of a child who is academically gifted, I believe the schools has done very well in accommodating her needs. She has been placed into eighth grade level one math as a seventh grader, teachers provide her with above grade level reading material, and gave familiarized her with several science programs; she is interested in the ISEF program and would love to participate in what it offers as a high schooler. I would like to thank the administration for recognizing my daughter's abilities, as previous schools disregarded them. Socially, there may be some issues. Kids are very divisive at this school, which results in the formation of many social groups. Although my daughter had not been bullied, she has witnessed others being bullied. The social issues at this school aren't many, and are quite honestly typical for children of this age, but the administration should pay more heed to it. All things considered, this school is very satisfying.

This school is unsatisfactory. There are some wonderful teachers, however the bullying is out of control. All they care about is the test scores and the attendance at this school. After many, many attempts to have the situation rectified, it was never taken care of. There are even teachers that bully there. The superintendant needs to really find out what is going on there because the Principal calls the bullying small doses of children "making fun of" and puts the children that are getting made fun of as victims. They are more concerned with test scores. The lunch time is 20 min which includes the children going through the lunch line, therefore by the time the child gets their lunch they have about 10 min to gulp their lunch down. The children get so much homework. In my child's first year she had a six page packet in Science alone and is a Special student, and a total of 10 worksheets. By the time eigth grade came I was so fed up because teachers did nothing to report the bullying and help her Special needs that I ended up home schooling. Make sure you tune to the bullying there as a parent. This climate of this school needs to change!!!!!

My school experience here was okay. It wasn't great but it could have been a lot worse. The teachers are mediocre and some have been mean, but most of the mean ones have been fired. Smith is like a hump, one must pass in the Glastonbury School System. GHS is great and the elementary schools are great, but the middle schools aren't so great. I don't recommend enrolling your child in a private school for these 2-3 years because these are the years the groups of friends are formed.

I am also a seventh grader. I agree with the last review. The food is terrible. They serve something called "Super Nachos" which is basically chips, chemical "cheese", and mystery meat. I would call this a bad snack. They hardly ever serve awesome things like calzones or turkey. Also, the teachers are pretty nice, but I am learning the exact same things as last year in every normal class but history. the test to determine math placement is based on speed instead of accuracy, and i have slower nerves connecting to my hands, and i am not fast at things. I know people who got the same grades as me yet got in a higher level because of this. The technology is out of date. Bad kids get a ton of rewards, while good kids hardly get any rewards. The music is pretty good, though. Kids focus way too much on going out with eachother and other stuff like that. I am not liking this school that much so far.

Im a student at Smith Middle School and this my first year here. Right now things aren't great. The technology honestly isn't really good, the food is unhealthy, processed, and disgusting, and no one really helps you. The school is divided to how well you are at sports. If you play a sport people think you're a cool guy. If you don't they think you're a loser and you have no life. Come on. It;s not like you're gonna get an athletic scholarship from Duke or Uconn. You need to do something that you could do in your life that there's a high chance of doing in the future. Right now I feel like going to another school the way the school is built. It's not fun honestly.
