There are a few terrific and highly underpaid teachers here and some awful teachers. If your student likes a teacher in the 7th grade--lucky them! They may well have that same teacher for the next 6 years. Might be a drawback if the teacher is not so good or if there is a personality conflict. Choices in classes are minimal, as there are only 8 jr high/high school teachers. The two AP classes offered here are excellent and the school is lucky to have Mrs. Cote devote so much time and effort into teaching them. Unfortunately, there is some instability in the administration--the school is on their fourth principal in five years and second superintendent. Another drawback is that there are few extracurricular options and to participate in sports or speech and drama, students miss a lot of school and spend long hours on bus rides to distant towns to compete. Montana school kids are a hardy group and must be admired for their toughness and endurance.

I can tell you that we relocated to Gardiner from California (job advancement), I was somewhat worried, as we were in the Marin school district, considered on of the best in California. The California school my kids attended received a GreatSchools.org rating in the top 50 overall in the country, and Gardiner around 450. Not sure who does these ratings, but they could not have gotten this one more wrong. We were more than pleasantly surprised, let me say exhilarated! I have two kids, a boy and a girl, and can tell you that this school more than holds their own in the realm of academics and enrichment. What I enjoy the most is a well-rounded, balanced, curriculum. There are no teachers professing a subject matter, spinning in their own ideologies instead, the instruction is full-bodied and thought provoking. Whenever my wife frequents this school, she communicates how privileged we are, as Gardiner would absolutely be a private school were it located in California. I hope the other Gardiner parents appreciate and value what they have here, one of the finest High Schools in the state.
