My children have loved Cumberland Elementary School. We switched into the school system mid-year and the administration and faculty could not have done more to make my children feel at home. My youngest made HUGE improvements in his reading and my oldest had wonderful experiences with the TAG program.

All four of my children have attended this school, and I can honestly say it just keeps getting better and better. The music and art teacher provide fine arts experiences second to none, with a fourth grade holiday musical each Decemeber. There are multiple student led clubs and challenges, including a recent kindness challenge that students have sent across the country and to neighboring Longwood University and Hampden-Sydney College. Some of my children have received gifted services as well as special needs, and the school works very diligently to make sure their needs are met and that they are learning. The school feels like family, and we are quite happy here.

The Cumberland County school system is a joke. The administration comes up with programs that cost the tax payers a lot of money but they do not teach the children. They rely on computer programs to teach the kids instead of actually teaching. Their SOL scores are below state average in most subjects over the last 3 years and the scores keep dropping year after year. Why, because the children are not being taught. Do a search on the net and you'll find that there are 1,067 elementary schools in Virginia and Cumberland Elementary ranks 1,028. I think that speaks volumes about this school system. Every year more and more parents are turning to homeschooling their kids in Cumberland because the school is not teaching the basics that they need. The school is setting the kids up for failure by giving them false hope that they are smarter then what they actually are. It is one of those systems that every kid makes the team and nobody fails. The Cumberland County school system will not teach your kids the fundamentals they need at the age they need it, and if you are unfortunate enough that your children have to go here then plan on teaching them yourself when they get home from school.
