I have one boy in Mt View right now, and his older brother also attended this school. Both of my kids are autistic, although on the outside they seem to be “normal.” This disparity has caused some issues for my boys through their lives, with adults who don’t know them becoming frustrated by certain behaviors that they don’t expect from kids this age - because again, they don’t “look” or “act” autistic. Mt View has been nothing short of wonderful with my kids. My youngest has severe ADHD as well, and they were proactive about putting together a plan to best support him in class so he can focus and learn and feel good about the work he’s done at the end of the day. There have been some bullying issues over the years, but I feel the school was responsive and, importantly, already aware and taking steps to rectify the situation. They are huge on family involvement. Myself, my mother, and my grandmother have all volunteered at school, during school hours. It’s pretty cool to get to sit in your son’s class for an hour and work on math with him and his friends.I feel they also do a decent job at providing a well rounded education. They have chickens and a garden, PE, art, and music. My oldest son is into some pretty creepy stuff - he’s a horror buff and a budding artist. I appreciated that when he had art assignments and would draw or sculpt something that was honestly kind of terrifying (but not inappropriate or violent. He makes characters for horror games.) the school never made him feel any type of way for his unique interest and was always just really supportive of everything he wanted to do and make. The kid is a great artist and an even greater sculptor and I really think Mt View deserves some credit for always encouraging kids to work hard and do what makes them happy.

Our sons thrived there. Principal was great. Teachers were engaged and proactive, supported GaT program. What else can one ask for?

School facilities are worn out, improper allocation of school funds requiring excessive operations at school from Dept of Ed, school runs regular fundraisers that are Really great and everyone loves and participates. Support not available for any special case students as funding doesn't allow, Teachers genuinely care and will flex when able. Let the teachers teach the way the students learn.

Mt. View Elementary K -1 has a very professional, caring, team of teachers who are up to date and using best practices to meet the Oregon Common Core Goals, while making learning interesting in a positive atmosphere. They are continuing to encourage students who did not attend K or Pre K classes or are special need students, and are behind in classroom socialization or academic skills. Both my grandson and now my granddaughter have had the wonderful experience of learning in this elementary. I appreciate that Mt. View works hard on the basics and yet is able to provide learning outside the classroom, such as Resident Artists and Science, SMART.

My son just Started Second grade at Mt. View this year 2010-2011. Previously he attended Wilson, but do to the lack of leadership and discipline to the students who were violent towards other students we transferred my son to Mt. View.My son is in Mrs. Fischer's second grade class. Previous to working as a teacher Mrs. Fischer was a counselor she knows how to work with children and how to word things so they don't get their feelings hurt when they do something wrong. She is an absolutely amazing teacher! Also Mrs. O' Neil is the Principle and she truly cares about the children. She is more then willing to meet with parents one on one as well as work together with you and other people at the school to get your child/children the best education possible.
