they have banned settings on the student chromebooks, (almost) every Chrome extension is blocked, many school/information websites are blocked, digital passes are overly complicated compared to paper (unnecessary digitilization of everything), lack of diverse support for students who have different ways of learning, lack of privacy and personal freedom

CHS sends more students to the Ivy Leagues than any school in the area. It is an outstanding school for the highly academic, college-bound and grade-driven student.

Former student at CHS,my children briefly attended CHS before we moved out of the state.I agree with the post below that CHS is a great school for the gifted,and academically inclined, who are actively advocated for by their parent's and educators.However,I think CHS has a long history of failing the average to below average student. These kids are placed in class rooms that are more crowded than the honors classes and can be chaotic as a result. CHS seems to have no ability or motivation to engage the average to below average student to strive for higher academic achievement.Staff development along these lines is lacking and has been so for sometime.These kids are essentially being housed,and are required to do the bare minimum to meet graduation requirements.The racial and economic divide that exist between the honor programs kids and the lower performing students is still quite obvious.It's sink or swim for the average to below average student at CHS. It's a public school, if they do not have outside support advocating and pushing for them to excel they likely will not,because they are certainly not getting that support from teachers and administrators.

CHS may be a great public high school choice for gifted self-motivated honors students. There are plenty of those students there. They are mostly white and wealthy. CHS has a larger population of culturally and economically diverse students who seem to be a challenge to serve. The principal has been there for two years. She is the leader and does not accept the role of a team player. She does not return phone calls to parents or respond to emails. Access to her is closely guarded by her personal assistant who will go to great lengths including intimidation to discourage access. If you are an all honors student and will not need access to the authorities it may be a great choice. If not, then your student will be in classes with a diverse population who handle the stresses of a chaotic environment in different ways. Teachers may be willing to make a role model out of your student and will have the support and freedom from the principal to do so. If a student or parent ends up needing the help of the principal, you will not get it. The administration has adopted her style. Some teachers are not naturals in their roles but some teachers at CHS are truly excellent.

We have had two children who both attended CHS, one graduated with honors the other did not feel safe after the first year after being solicited and then threatened by another student. I do appreciate the responsiveness of the admin. and the full-time security officers. Since there is a very high teacher turnover at CHS (about 30% each year), our second child was not able to get the same great teachers that our first child recommended. Sadly, those teachers were simply not at CHS four years later. Because the guidance counselors were all new and unfamiliar with the teaching style of the new teachers, they could not recommend a good fit for our intelligent underachieving child. CHS is the only public High School in Charlottesville there is no other choice. We are thankful we could afford a private tutor for our oldest child. A personal connection with an experienced teacher, who feels secure in keeping their job from one year to the next, would help to create better students than a personal computer for each student and a smart-board in each classroom.
