  My son has a summer birthday so he was very young when he started Kindergarten at St Mary St Michael. My husband and I struggled with whether or not to hold him back at SMSM, move him on or change schools and repeat the same the grade. After much thought and discussion of our concerns with the teachers here we made the decision to keep him at SMSM and repeat Kindergarten. The Kindergarten teacher and the First-second grade teacher arranged their classroom schedules such that he can have reading, phonics and math with the first grade and the other subjects with the Kindergarten keeping in line with our desire to hold him back yet keep him engaged and challenged in the subjects in which he excels. Where else could we do this? He is happy and enjoying school very much this year. We are so impressed with the caring concern and dedication of the teachers here; and we feel truly blessed to be a part of this community.   The environment at our school is one of academic excellence with a Christian emphasis. The students and staff become family as the year progresses, and we truly care about helping each other become the best we can be spiritually, academically, and socially. We utilize the latest technology and afford our students varied opportunities to explore the world beyond our boundaries. Every teacher on staff has been trained in the Orton-Gillingham method of teaching, which is a broad reading/writing/listening skills set that we have found helps us reach all learners.
