There just seems to be too many kids for the administration to control. My kid (and friends) said there are fights every day and had fears about their safety. Too many kids and not enough spots for after school sports, activities, electives. Makes it cutthroat to get spots. My kid said the general feeling was depression amongst the students and feared school shootings because of the sadness that was palpable within the student body. Not to mention, racism which is widely acknowledged by the district and is “being worked on” but results in illegal searches and targeting. In order to “cut down on teacher’s workload”, discipline parent notification comes in form of a generic email with no detail about what happened that is sent the following week after the incident. It could be as simple as your kid talking in class or something more serious. You have to email the generic notice back to ask for details. No direct communication from the teacher if there are any problems! Lucky for me, my child did relatively well in school, but mentally this school was very taxing. After having another child here many years ago, I can say it has gone completely downhill. There are still gems of teachers, but again, way too many kids for anyone to get attention. The counselor was also amazing, which is unbelievable, as each counselor has over 400 kids to follow (an entire grade)!!If you have other options please consider them before putting your kid through this.

This school has been going steadily downhill for several years. Look at the Great School rating and listen to previous student and parent experiences. Fights, bullying and behavior issues are making for a chaotic and unwelcoming school environment. There may be a lot of student activities but my kids opted out of most of them due to not wanting to be in an unsafe place with limited supervision. The administration have either given up or simply don’t care. We’re strong proponents of the public school system but strongly considering moving or putting our youngest daughter in a private school when she reaches the middle school years.

My kid says that he and his friends witness fights almost everyday in school. He faces incessant bullying everyday and there is nothing the staff or the school do, despite filing complaints. Kids need to know that their actions have repercussions which does not seem to be the case in this school. They need more field staff and hall monitors during breaks and passing periods. Disappointed and disheartened with the state of the school.

Terrible school for my kids, castro valley is a small town with a option of only two middle schools, principals are terrible, I see alot of fights happening, and drugs being sold here. This school used to be better when my Kids were there, They dont focus as much on academics anymore after covid.

My child succeeded academically, but was bullied incessantly, witnessed fights between students daily, and generally felt unsafe at this school. In my conversations with administration I gathered that they’re overwhelmed by student behavior and don’t have the resources to deal with it or help struggling students. My child did great academically thanks to support from dedicated teachers and other support outside of school, despite being repeatedly threatened and harassed by other students, and loud, disruptive and chaotic classroom environment.

I am currently a student at Canyon Middle School. There are a lot of problems I've noticed, things include constant fights and bullying, very minimal discipline and the counselors not doing anything when students open up. Last year, I reported a sexual assault claim and nothing was done to my assaulter, she stayed in school, no suspension, nothing done to help me or the other students whom she had done this to as well. I don't feel safe in this school, there are constant behavioral issues and yet it keeps happening. Disruptive people in classes? Nothing happens. I've had to miss out on important information because my teacher won't make the kids listen, and instead will move on to the next topic hoping that interests them more. Very disappointed, principal and school board needs to take a stand.

During my one year at this school (online) I came across many problems. First, one of my teachers would talk about her political ideas and say how the opposite party as hers were delusional. Not only did this effect me but it made me lose any sort of respect for her. Being on the opposite political party as her made me upset. They would push these morally incorrect ideas into my classmates minds and I just didn’t know what to say. One instance that really stood out to me was when she said “_____ supports are dumb” while my some of my classmates agreed with them I just sat there, confused and shocked at what just came out of my teachers mouth. I would not want to go back to this school, it really had a emotional effect on me.

My children have finished attending so I am writing this review. There are many good and dedicated teachers and coaches. However, there were far to many mediocre teachers. Please send home math tests so we can get tutors to help. How difficult can it be to make more that one version of the same test? I am VERY concerned with Math grade inflation that does not match state test scores. I would like to see more school support for the excellent on site (private) after school care. How about short term parking spots for student pick up? I also would like more effective discipline used for constantly disruptive students.

Not good. I hate my child has to attend this school. But only two schools here and the other is full. Thinking of moving to a new city for a better school and experience

I am currently an 8th grader at Canyon Middle School. My school is amazing! All of the teachers are great, and everyone gets involved. The school has aloud the art class to paint famous painting throughout the school, which allows us to remain creative. There are so many terrific opportunities the school provides for its students and all of them are amazing. The school takes many out of district transfer students and they just make our school family better. I couldn't ask for a better school.
