My grandson transferred into this school half way through the first semester into 6th grade. From the time we entered the school to register him, the staff was awesome. They were welcoming and caring from day 1. The teachers are extremely responsive and are easily accessible by email. The online portal to keep up with assignments, class work, and grades is very user friendly and helpful for this grandmother to keep up with his academics. I have nothing but good things to say about this school thus far. There are some rotten eggs in the student body, which is the case in every school, but my grandson and I have talked about it and how to handle interactions with those students. Fortunately my grandson is quiet, a well behaved child and is not drawn towards bad behavior. Middle School years are tough and kids can go in the wrong direction but my grandson has been surrounded by positive people thus far. He has great teachers this year who have been very positive. He has enjoyed learning this year and is already looking forward to next year's classes. I realize no one likes homework but the only thing that I would like to see is more than the spattering of homework so that I can see what he is learning. I have enjoyed working with him when he does have things to finish at home. Not all parents have this kind of time and I understand that but its important to see what the kids are learning and doing so that we can be a partner in their education. Thanks Burnet Middle School for making this transition for him a positive one!

We moved into this district this year, and this is our first time attending Burnet MS. Based on our experience with previous districts, this school is severely struggling to adapt to the challenges of behavior that the students have returned to school with. Discipline is lacking. Problems are not dealt with promptly, and problem students know they can get away with their disruptive behaviors. Most times they get a "conference" or "lunch detention" even for serious infractions. The behavior program allows certain students to get away with even more behavior. My son has been cussed at and challenged to fight by one of these students, and the student received no consequences other than getting to go hang out in a private room and play games on his computer! My son says most of the students know that these students can get away with stuff, including the behavior students themselves. He says there are also a lot of them, unlike his previous school district. Academics are also lacking. I do not feel like this school challenges students. Instead it's about the lowest common denominator. The curriculum is dumbed down so that all students can pass. The school also has an extremely high rate of special education and 504. They simply do not have the staff to deal with these numbers while maintaining challenging curriculum and high expectations for neuro-typical students. The focus is on numbers - is every student passing? Instead the focus should be on content mastery - is every student learning the TEKS required for this class and grade level? My son's assignments rarely reflected high expectations. He also complained they would spend repeated classes on basic concepts that students should have learned in previous grades because some students could just not get it. Why is there not pull-out or resource classes for these students? Many teachers were lovely. However, their frustration with the school was obvious. Several teachers quit in the middle of the school year! The principals are often unreachable during the day by parents and by teachers. A couple teachers told me that they themselves could not get returned emails or phone calls from administrators about current classroom issues. I think many of these teachers could be effective and competent, but are being hindered by poor leadership and lack of support.I am not comfortable sending my student to this school. We have pulled him out and moved him outside of this district.

My daughter said that her 6th grade year was the best year she has had so far in school! She loves Burnet Middle School!
