This school and it’s after school is so exhausting. My advice to other parents is to run!

I've loved our experience so far. We choose PS 54 based on word of mouth and it's closeness to us. It's walkable from our house, and even though we got into an on-paper "better" school in another neighborhood with more established resources and a wealthier parent base--which sadly seems to equal more resources--we choose this school, and haven't regretted it. The community vibe is huge, parents help each other out and support one another through pick ups, play dates, issues. It feels like a family, it looks like the neighborhood it's in, it is full of warmth and potential for more greatness in the coming years. Give it a look regardless of the low score you may see here and elsewhere.

Our daughter started pre-k at PS54 in September (in the dual language class) and she loves it! We do too. Her teacher, Ms. Sergeeva is so wonderful and loving and supportive, and really takes the time to understand our child and teach her accordingly. All of the pre-k and K teachers there are really wonderful, our daughter has gotten to know them as they rotate teaching after school (we love them too!). The principal, Mr. Pirro, is so involved and engaged. The parent coordinator, Ms.Sabek, is so lovely and helpful always. All of the other parents are wonderful. The PTA is run by incredible parents and they are so welcoming and helpful, there is certainly a need for more funding and they are working so hard. Very diverse in many ways (racially, ethnicallly, economically) which we really appreciate. Feels like a strong community that we are thrilled to be a part of. Our daughter is having such a wonderful experience and I just can't say enough good things. I feel like this school may not get the "buzz" of some other schools in our district (D13) but it should! We are thrilled and grateful.

Our son just started PreK and we are truly happy with the school. Mr. Pirro, the principal, is wonderful. This is his 3rd year at the school and since his arrival the school has gotten better and better. He and his staff are making a big transformation. The building is really beautiful, needs a little help outside, but inside is in very good condition and the classes have a great set up and atmosphere. My son goes happy to school everyday and loves his teachers! (miss Small and miss Jacob).

I wish a school like PS54 was available when I and my children were growing up. The dedication of the staff on all levels is amazing. Mr. Pirro is an amazing principal he genuinely wants all the children, staff, school to succeed. The teschers and course work engages young minds and allow them to develop and criticality THINK and look at all avenues to solve their lessons, projects etc. Did I mention the school revolve around tech and science? Very cutting edge, very hands on for parents, children and staff. The school deserve an award in customer service. Everyone on staff communicates and the principal answers all his emails. coI cannot put in words how great this school is because they have surpassed my expectations. What can I say Amazing things are happening at Ps54 Samuel Banes.

I cant say enough great things about this school! One evening I arrived to pick my pick my son up from school and didnt know at the time that I was speaking with the assistant principle. When I asked her to point me to his after school program she asked who my son was and she not only knew him by first and last name, knew exactly where he was. My son is a struggling student and each staff member offers the same level of concern as they would for their own children. They are also very tech savvy. I'm able to get a daily update on my child's day to day progress through an app distributed by his teachers. It's the best of both worlds a public school with the same care and attention of a private. Great Job, Jermaine S
